I recently switched over from my Canon S2 to an XTI. I picked up the Canon 50mm 1.8 for indoor shots. I've been researching like crazy trying to figure out what walk-around lens to pick up and I've narrowed it down to 2 I can find fairly commonly for $260-330 used.
Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon
or the
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for Canon

My biggest concern is Image quality.
I've read so many great reviews about the Tamron and after looking at the equipment people own on this site I can tell that a lot of people here like the Tamron. How is the image quality compared to the Canon? How about the speed of the focus and the build quality? I've read every once in a while about quality issues from Tamron and Sigma, is this something I should really be concerned about?

If you have any other lenses you think are similar in price that are worth looking at let me know!

I'll be willing to bet you'll get a lot of votes for the Tamron. It's a very popular lens. Sharp, fast (large 2.8 constant aperture) and of a professional build.

Got em both. Have had the Tamron for many years. 28-135mm came with my 40D. What is important to ya? f/2.8 or range?

I love my Tamron quite at bit and I cover the range with other lenses in my kit so gave the 28-135mm to the wife for use on the Rebel. I shot the 28-135mm few times and liked the range so I tried to get it back (no go). Range was nice and the IQ seemed a tiny bit sharper.

However I shot a night time indoor/outdoor holiday party the other night started with the 28-135mm and it was only a short time before I fell back to the trusty tammy. The 28-135mm for me just couldn't compare to the 28-75mm in adverse conditions. In ideal lighting (outdoors walkaround) the 28-135mm IS rocks.

So depending on what you're gonna do might help you decide.

I have the Tamron and love it ... it's my default lens on my camera ... I'd be lost without it ...

Sorry to intrude... I'm a Nikon user, but the Tamron is a great lens, certainly my choice of walkaround.

I have both, and while I like the Canon for the IS capibilities... The Tamron is the lens of choice between the two. It works so much better than the canon when put in adverse conditions like awpollard stated. I would highly reccomend the tamron lens over the others.

I've owned both. Between the two, I'd pick the Tamron 28-75, hands down. In fact, I replaced the Canon 28-135 with the Tamron. The Canon, while longer and having IS, is slow, dark and soft.

I will say that I don't think 28mm is really wide enough for a "walk-around" lens. You might want to take a look at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 as well.

I think I'm going to end up going with the Tamron and then getting a 70-300 or something similar to cover the telephoto length I want. I appreciate all the responses, I really want to get the best picture quality out of my lens and it looks like the Tamron will be the perfect fit for me. Thanks everyone!
