I have a friend who is planning to purchase a Nikon D80, and I would like to give him the correct advice as to which lens / lens combination he should buy to start out. It is basically a choice between the 18-55mm plus a 55-200mm VR combination or just the standard 18-135mm. I am a Canon user, and have no clue as to the Nikon range of lenses. He would like to do both portrait and macro photography.

I recently got the D80 with the 18-135 lens and I am really impressed with its quality and versatility. It's a darn good all-purpose lens. |

I understand the 18-200 VR is a pretty good lens - not sure how it compares on the price side of things, but would definitely be worth investigating. |

I had the 18-135mm on my D80 as a kit and was very happy with the lens. Good value to if you buy camera and lens as a kit. Then he could buy the nikon 70-300mm vr later. |
