I haven't been surprised by DPC scores in quite some time, but this one caught me off guard. So - why did it score so low? Looking for honest feedback here; no holds barred or punches pulled.

Thanks!

Reddish/Pinkish hue doesn't seem right, it lacks punch or drama. My two cents anyway.

I think the colours just didn't work for you here. This photo would probably have done better in black and white.

I also think the color seems off, like the reds are oversatuarted and the pose seems a bit awkward as well. I don't think it's a bad shot by any means though.

maybe its me, but that noise reduction (if thats what you did to it) makes it a bit spooky. And that girl is pretty, just the noise reduction did it to me.

I think the portrait is nice, not stellar, but nice. The score however, likely suffered because it was entered in a free study. Voters tend to want WOW images for free studies and don't normally score portraits very well. (A lesson I've learned all too well) :/

I have a feeling the color was the major issue here, as it seems un-natural, and when coupled to a different than normal point of view, well, it just doesn't sit right in a way. Minor CCW rotation and cropped will completely change it's impact. Get in tight and keep the eyes off the same horizontal plane for starters.

I personally would have given it a 6 had I voted. I'm not in love with the composition but it's not bad or anything. The color seems to be what did you in from all of the comments on it. Portraits have a very high standard from what I've seen, more so than almost anything else. You could butcher a landscape into a tonemapping disaster and still score well but be off on the color just a bit on a portrait and you're doomed. If you were trying to be creative with the color I would suggest being more bold about it so people don't confuse it as a mistake (ex. cross processing).

Heh. I had this version entered but chickened out, thinking I'd go with the "normal, safe" coloring.

No offense intended, but this version is even funkier than the one you submitted.

Oh, I know. But I'm hoping it least looks deliberate. :)

I agree with Cindi mostly. Ya, there may have been some color issues, but people want AMAZING photos in Free Studies. Voting tends to be a bit harsher and there are certain types of photos that generally don't do as well unless it is AMAZING (manny, for example). Your image is great, don't get me wrong, but don't measure its value from the votes of a Free Study. That's tough!

Here Jeff, you asked for it, so I'll give my honest opinion : )

I'm not so hot on your second edit - it doesn't look intentional. I think that your processing on the first one (except for the color which I don't even think was that bad) is pretty good. I like the softness and everything.

My main concern with the photo is not the processing, but the actual photo itselt. It just doesn't strike me as natural. She doesn't seem to be looking at the camera in a very natural pose (the unnaturalness seems to really come from her neck angle - looks uncomfortable) and also at that angle, the way she's slightly biting her lip doesn't help either. It also sends a mixed signal to the viewer: is she trying to look sweet with the smile, or is she trying to look sinister/scary with her eyes and the angle she's looking at us from?

Also, in the nit-picky details: the color/texture of the shirt(s) she's wearing takes away from her face with only that much showing. In a full portrait (sorry about my technical lingo) it would probably be alright, but since we can only see a small piece at her neck and this is supposed to just be a face shot, it detracts (a simple shirt would do better). She also has this strip of white along the left side that brings attention.

I think that technically and processing-wise, the photo is good. Your composition of the subject in the frame is good, your focus, the softness, etc. It's just the pose that doesn't do it for me.

I hope that helps. If you want any clarification or if I'm being confusing in any way, please PM me.
