We are pleased to announce that the often-requested, long-awaited keyboard voting feature is now available to all users.

To take advantage of keyboard voting, simply visit your My Preferences page to enable it and to select your keyboard voting method. You can select from the following six choices:

Disabled (Off) - With this option selected, you can vote by mouse only.
Single Tap - Press a number to register your vote.
Single Tap with Enter - Press a number, then Enter, to register your vote.
Double Tap - Press a number twice to register your vote.
Hold ALT - Press ALT and a number to register your vote.
Hold CTRL - Press CTRL and a number to register your vote.

For all of the above options, the numbers 1-0, on either the top of your keyboard or the numbers pad, will register your vote. The 0 key is used to register a vote of 10.
You can easily access the next/previous photo buttons using your keyboard as well, using any of the following options:

NEXT: [->], [>], [.], [+], [=] (right arrow*, greater than, period, plus, equal)
PREVIOUS: [<-], [<], [,], [-] (left arrow*, less than, comma, minus)

Note that if you have selected "Hold ALT" or "Hold CTRL", that you must hold those keys with any of the above.
The left and right arrow will not work with "Hold ALT" as all major browsers reserve this as Back and Forward.

Writing comments has been made easier too!

If you've enabled keyboard voting and you'd like to leave a comment, just start typing! As long as your comment begins with a letter, the cursor will automatically move to the comment box, and your comment will be recorded. If you are using any of the "tap" options, simply press Tab after you finish your comment to move out of the comment box before voting. If you are using one of the "hold" options, there is no need to tab out first.

Compatibility Notes

Some of the above options work better with certain browsers and operating systems than others, for example:

All browsers: The arrow keys will not work with "Hold ALT". Those key combinations are used as "back" and "forward". The other navigation key choices will work.
IE7 and Firefox in Windows - Use of "Hold CTRL" is not recommended. Ctrl + 1-9 are used by these browsers for selecting tabs.
Firefox in Linux - Use of "Hold ALT" is not recommended. Alt + 1-9 is used by this browser for selecting tabs.

If needed, we will add to the list above based on your feedback

Happy voting and commenting!

Yes, great move, love it.

Seems like we might get a few 1s when 10s were intended, but that should correct itself after a few mistakes. Thanks for this added convenience.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Langdon.

Hey...quick question...can we have larger text boxes in the 'Edit Image Details' area please? Just like the text boxes in the forums.

I guess the appeal of this escapes me but I'm happy everyone else likes it. I see I can vote on images before they even load!

ETA: Wouldn't it have made sense to get a beeping sound (i.e. no vote placed) if you try to vote while the image is still loading?

Be sure to send a message to all of the trolls and tell them that a 0 is worse than a 1

Some folks just don't like the mouse - especially if it's a touchpad. =)

You could do that with the mouse previously as well - come on, give voters some credit.

I like the feature alot! Makes voting much easier and faster without sacrificing time looking at each entry - for me anyway.

GREAT improvement!

Nice job guys! Thanks for making things easier :)

Now only thing to do is to get rid of the top line of numbers (no idea why they were implemented really - i think the increased visibility of the bottom set was enough) and get the thing to automatically go to the top of the image, and then we can see full screen portrait shots without scrolling?

Just one or two suggestions from using the jeff_mod Greasemonkey script which i found extremely useful before the change...
