Very cool, thanks for the updates!

I think this will be an interesting foray into multiple exposures, but IMHO I'd prefer to see ditypchs and triptychs legalized than all the PP and objective wording necessary for time-lapse and HDR:

I spotted this image over at the January where you live side challenge thread. Roz was going to enter it in the challenge this week under the new rules. It failed the pre-validation test. So I thought it useful to add to the discussion here.

It is looking more and more like they intended to keep to true "natural motion."

That's interesting. One wonders if someone running would be considered natural if that isn't. Seems both are to me.

quite! this needs to be cleared up quickly as otherwise the SC might be hit with oh so many DQ requests (and possible 10 images per request). My stonking idea is seeming dodgy now and am unimpressed.

How many threads are going on this?

Ecce Signum is just freaking out because his LoD image just crashed to earth in a flaming ball of disqualified wreckage.

The phrase "natural subject motion" will be the death of us all. I'm afraid it's going to be way too subjective. I would also call roz's image a depiction of natural subject motion.

Now I'm confused, it's because he moved through the frame slowly?

I have another question though, if you shoot a burst of 10 photos (oh how I wish)can you select which of the 10 to use or is that cherry picking, do they have to consecutive shots or can some be removed for composition?

lol, sorry peeps, its not even taken yet but I'd hate to let Falc off with a DQ. Plan b maybe and a single shot with loads of pics of the moon overlaid ;)

Sorry, can't find the post but this has been brought up before and yes, I seem to remember SC might look into the 'gaps' betweeen shots (surely a bummer for those taking shots over days?). I must turn the 1DMKIIn to slow.

What I see in the image by Roz is natural motion taken at regular intervals. No where in the description is the word 'burst' included and nothing about this image compares to the one by Kiwiness used to illustrate a very weak point. We're allowed up to 10 images. I see three and if they are in sequence which I'm going to assume they are, then this image is perfecty acceptible within the description of the challenge. If the challenge is this subjective to interpretation perhaps it's best to revise the desription befor more people waste their time and efforts.

If Kiwiness moved around the church while the camera captured different positions over time, how is that different from the golfer shot?

Thanks, it's all as clear as mud really.

The deciding factor can't be whether the subject was prompted to act or was photographed unknowingly in a natural action. Correct?

and...
I can see how the picture just posted could violate the cherry picking argument if roz used the continuous shooting mode and then deleted a bunch of intermediate images. However, what if the photog took one frame every 5 seconds during this sequence and the combination of three frames created this time lapse image?

If my continuous shooting rate is too fast for my picture, I plan on a manually timed(think onealligator, twoalligator) sequential shutter trip to catch the action as it happens with equal time periods between each frame. I believe this is within the letter and spirit of the rules????

So, I agree if the 'cherry picking' argument was used. I don't agree if the 'unatural' movement argument was used. I don't think one could argue that an image similar to kiwiness' All My Brothers is portraying natural movement. Running, walking, jumping, flying, throwing, hitting, kicking, fighting, and biting all seem like 'natural' movements.

Maybe i'm just thickheaded...

Agreed, I've spent a ton of time on mine and now I'm wodering too. If this type of shot is disallowed there are going to be a lot of DQs, I predict.

The golfer's motion is linear.

What is remotely natural about moving to 30 different positions in a church? Even if each frame was taken exactly two minutes apart?
01/04/2008 06:14:57 PM · #318
The image by Roz demonstrates an action... beautifully I might add. There's a beginning a middle and an end to that action. There's no question that a sequence is being depicted. Which was the first position Kiwiness was sitting in and which was the last? No action or sequence at all from what I can tell.

Becuase Kiwi's doesn't show a natural movement, the golfer shot does, IMO. People sitting, standing in different places randomly in a room isn't natural movement.

What about someone running through a scene? I think I read earlier that is OK, but the golfer isn't?

I thought I had this figured out until the golfer shot came up.
01/04/2008 06:17:03 PM · #320
Yeah jeeze I thought Roz's shot would be good too. I mean it is natural motion right? OR not? OR maybe I should just expect my first DQ...
01/04/2008 06:17:57 PM · #321
Heres a question, lets say I shoot a 3 second scene on burst and select 5 of the 25 images to create my shot and someone else decides to take a picture a day of (say) the moon. SC might DQ my image because I 'chose' the frames I wanted from the 25 but would they be prepared to receive (maybe) 1,000 22mb files from the moon shooter who also shot weddings that week just to make sure there wasn't a moon shot amongst them?
01/04/2008 06:19:07 PM · #322
That's the problem Waz. There's no way of knowing what to expect now. The image by Roz IMO nailed the challenge perfectly and in a very unique way.

If I was scoping out lighting or camera angles for an important wedding shoot or church brochure, I might easily be in 30 positions over the course of investigation. I might be in all sorts of random places- sitting, standing, etc. It would be impossible to tell where I began or ended, but it would still be natural movement over time, no? Does motion have to be linear to be time-lapse? What if the golfer dropped a tee and turned to one side, DQ?

you know what really would be cool?

not only getting an email when you've got a new comment, but also when someone added you or a photo of yours as a favorite :D

Don't worry Andi, I have one lined up for tomorrow. It will be a stormer if it comes off ;-)
It could also just as easily be DQ'd, to be honest I have no idea which side of the fence it will fall.
