I am lucky enough to have a job that puts me in charge of the department camera, a Nikon D80. My boss says he would rather I take it home every day and use it than to leave it in the office. He is even letting me take it cross country to Utah during the Christmas break. I've asked him to let me use my department credit card to buy a camera bag to protect it. He agreed and said to get what I need within reason.

So hears what I think I need:

camera bag
lens cloth
white balance card
light reflector
remote

Did I leave any low cost 'necessities' out?

If you don't already have one; a cheap filter kit. (UV, Polarizer, etc)

I just bought a lowenpro bag the omni trekker for a trip and in the end I used my old bag.
If you want to make an offer on it. It is brand new and I bought it for I think 220.00 with taxes.

Spare memory card?
Spare USB cable?
Spare lens cap?
Something to diffuse the flash (e.g. tracing paper)?

I'm also interested in seeing what is suggested. All my gear was stolen a few months back; remembering all the things like bodies/lenses/flash is easy because they're written on my insurance policy. Trying to remember the little things that were in the bag like spare batteries and so on is a lot harder.

You could just use a note card for a white balance card, but since you're not paying for it it doesn't really matter. :) I'd also suggest getting a blower to blow out the sensor from time to time.
