Where have you tried to submit too? What about a state/province issued i.d?

Your profile says that you don't have a camera, so, no camera, no photos, problem solved. : )

I think that you should easily be able to quickly obtain a state issued ID. It's usually a simple thing to do. See if your government website has the info about getting an ID card. The stock sites should accept that.
If you plan to travel outside your home country, a passport is necessary, not an option.
I hope that you get set up to shoot digital photos soon, and that you will enjoy sharing some of them with us here at DPChallenge.

Here in the US, each state's Department of Motor Vehicles offers a non-driver identification card. If you don't drive, it's a good thing to have, as it's useful for identification in a variety of situations. Does Québec issue such a thing?

I've never owned a driver's license and have been on istockphoto, shutterstock, fotolia, 123RF and now Alamy and PhotographersDirect... I don't remember ever being asked for a DL.

and i thought i was literally the last human being to not own a drivers license

LOL

this keeps getting better and better.

although, all jokes aside,im pretty serious about getting that passport anyways,as i havent traveled for 15 years and i desperately wanna see England or New zealand (yes, because of Lord of the rings)

Hey, we recently drove past where it was shot, but weren't about to fork out the bucks just to see it (LOTR, that is)
An absolutely stunning country though. I can't wait to go back :D

So,it seems that this little photog will be applying for a passport very soon.

It looks like the process takes much less time than applying for some ID card.

Trippy! get it ? Trip-py ?

(cue rimshot effect and tomatoes flying )

uhhh why are you getting a passport?
02/17/2008 04:36:04 AM · #13
because shutterstock wants one?

don't they accept any other form if ID, like a birth certificate or something?

Can I ask a question here...

Does anyone know why stock sites require government ID?

In the US I could see asking for a copy of your SS Card and perhaps a W-9, but why would they need any more info?

perhaps just to make things simple.

not every country has a w-9, or birth certificate or different ID

EVERY country however has a passport, so it is an easy thing to ask for.

Tjat must be a new thing. I've never been asked for ID for stock.

yeah, it's new.
I have never been asked either, but when I was helping one of my friends sign up, shutterstock asked for ID. I think istock does as well.

Would be interesting to email them and ask them why they want a copy of photo ID. Wonder what the party line answer would be.

I believe it is for a couple reasons.

so people don't sign up with multiple accounts using themselves as the referer, or to download their own photos
so they know FOR SURE which country they are from so they know if they need to submit tax information.

I dont know much about stock sites but if I were to waive new member referral fees then they wouldnt need the ID. Drivers license doesnt help with tax - heck in half the states in the US illegal immigrants can still get DL's as can resident aliens without work permits.

My best guess, is so if they need/want to sue you (i.e. you upload someone elses work or a model without a true release), and they get sued - it makes it easier for them to track you down. Thats our wonderful litigious world. Of course they will never admit that. Got to love CYA.

at www.cutcaster.com we do not but are thinking of it. i hate to exclude people but don't want the spam and copyrighted content that inevitably pops up. we are creating a wall of shame to show the peoples names and ip addresses for people who posts others work and work extremely fast to reach out to the real copyright owner to get them notified and remove their content from the site.

take a look at www.cutcaster.com and let me know what you think.
