Dear Friends:

I am getting killed in the voting on the "Black" challenge, which is making me crazy.

To be sure, I don't have anywhere near the best photo in the contest, but, with a score that threatens to slip into the 3's, and a single comment that says "Nice picture, but you don't meet the challenge" I am looking for a very tall object from which to hurl myself.

OK, that last part isn't true.

But, if you could take a few minutes and either post your criteria for judging this challenge, send me a private message, or go back and comment on your lowest scoring images I would be incredibly grateful.

Before we start, I should tell you that my daughter thinks my entry is "junk" (an opinion that would have helped considerably more BEFORE I posted, but that is beside the point.) Giving that background, I expect to receive a fair amount of feedback that says "I just don't like that picture, I gave it a 1 and was looking for the zero button, but couldn't find it. These competitions are about ________ not about _________."

Seriously, thanks in advance,
Bill

P.S. There is no cat in my picture, so I know that isn't the problem.

I, for one, vote early, and when I am able to do so, comment later in the week. I think a lot of peeps don't make comments until later, so hang in, maybe you'll get some later on. If I don't get a chance to comment on yours during the voting period, PM me after voting is over and I'll comment.

im getting hammered also, but the one comment I did get was good.

Maybe my subject was poorly chosen. I did see a lot of images where black was not the main focus of the image, but rather something just in the back ground or out of focus with another subject as the main focus point.

I've learned that if you're getting hammered and there are no comments it's because people don't think it meets the challenge. My letting go shot isn't doing well and has 4 comments. 3 say it's great, 1 says it doesn't meet the challenge.

Persoanlly I try to comment on everything I vote low. I figure If I can't say why I'm voting it low, I shouldn't vote it low.

I voted last night on the Dark Challenge. I typically put all the photos in blocks. A 4 block a5, a6 and a7. During the week I go back to each section and weed them out. Some go up and a few go down. This way I view each picture more than once and can get a better handle on my voting. As I go over them this is when I comment. I realize I am not the best person to comment on most of the photos but usually I give thumbs up to what I like most and have a word to say if I don’t like it. Mostly I even like the poorly executed ones.
Hang in there, my entry is around 4.7 with 3 comments. To tell the truth I expected worse. We have a long week to go yet.

My voting process is a bit like jmritz's. And unless I gasp outloud when I first see a photo, I rarely comment on the first viewing.
Later during the week I'll try to say something constructive.

There in lies my problem and, I am sure, the problem of many. How do you give "pointers" when you need them yourself? I know what I like and what I don't, but who am I to give anybody advice? Yes some people will accept criticism, but some will get hurt. So I am sorry to say sometimes I just say nothing. I know should say something, I'm just worried it'll be taken the wrong way.

That was my 2 cents... :o)
