Should have just called it Macro III...OR...Far End of Focal Field.
Top 4 are all just macro shots IMO. All very good shots. But, not what I considered Shallow DOF.

Hi Olympian. Will you post or point to a shot that you see as SDOF.
Thanks.

From the first place down, the first one that fits the challenge according to my definition would be.

Great selection of macro-shots IMO.
What about

?
Of course it could be a miniature sea-gull ;)
Or maybe your definition of macro/non-macro is somewhat subjective!?

Actually, TerryGee's photo fits into my "Far End of Focal Field" category. Again, a BEAUTIFUL shot, just not my interpretation of Shallow DOF. Don't get me wrong, the photo's I voted on the highest all made it to top 6 places. They were all given the benefit of the doubt, due to the quantity of what I called Macro or FEFF photos. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar opinion.

Well, it didn't say to shoot something and isolate it from its background!!!! It said to shoot something to isolate it from its environment. 8p

Generally, you get the shallowest DOF with long focal length and short focus distance. So close-up shots, if not necessarily macros, would pretty much be the rule for this challenge, would it not? All three of the examples you chose of good SDOF are all macro or close-up.

Having said that, I do agree somewhat with your overall point, which is that I was looking for pictures that indicated a shallow DOF by having both the near and far field blurred (which two of your three examples achieved very well, and with good effect). I was a bit disappointed there weren't more shots that met that criteria.
