I know there are a lot of threads about microstock ruining stock photography, but the simply fact is that my portfolio is not big/strong enough to get in anyplace above Alamy (I've tried). What I'm debating now is iStockphoto exclusive for RF vs Alamy. Here are a couple of points I'm trying to sort out:
- From what I can tell an Extended Use license on iStockphoto is comparable to the RF license on Alamy.
- It seems that payout, as an iStockphoto exclusive, for an iStockphoto Extended License isn't far off the payout on an Alamy RF license.
- iStockPhoto is now owned by Getty, so proving yourself on iStockPhoto may be a path into Getty.
- Like it our not, iStockPhoto has got some outstanding images. How can I expect people to pay more for my images when they have access to some great stuff at iStockPhoto prices.

Anyway, I've hit that analysis paralysis stage and am not moving at all, so I need some help. thanks!

No offence nico_blue, but every time I see that name I want stuff my camera under a rock and go back to designing I/T systems for a living. (No, I'm not telling which rock hides the 30D and nice new 24-70L) But, this is a perfect example of the outstanding work that can be found on iStockPhoto right now. Heavy sigh...

well there is no doubt a good number of photographers making a decent amount of $$ from istock. There is a larger amount of photogs. making money from the big 6 micro agencies.

If i were you I would submit images to the big 6 microstock agencies (if you didn't mind uploading to them all), then when you were able to become exclusive at istock, consider wether it is worth it or not.

I agree the back door into getty is definatly an attractive thing for many. I am not exclusive anywhere, and am pretty sure I will keep it that way, but I know quite a few photographers who have picked istock to be exclusive with.

I think the best way to make this choice is with more data. Pictures sell differently on different sites. Your photos might do great on IS or Alamy bu not the other. For me, I was not exclusive to IS, but I tried photos on both sites for over a year. For me, I would have been better off not uploading to Alamy and putting all of my pictures on IS (more money over the course of a year or so). Others, i have heard moved photos from micros to Alamy and ended up with more money. I really suggest you give it a try with your own pictures.

Then there is the debate that Leaf mentioned. Going with multiple sites or exclusive to one. I think again it is a collect some data approach. I agree with what he said.

One final note, I know Alamy accepts photos for editorial use. I don't think IS does, but I could be very wrong here. If this is an area of interest to you, you should take this into consideration as you make your choice. For me, i like not being exclusive and working with multiple micros and Alamy. The trick for me is figuring out which photos should be on Alamy and which ones on micros. Hope this helps.
