Enjoy your visit. Venezia is a great ending to your Italy excursion. 3 days in Milano may be a little long, but you may need some rest by that point as Roma and Firenze can be a wonderful assault on your senses.

If you get a chance to stop by Siena when traveling from Rome to Pisa, it is worth it to stop and (1) see the Duomo and (2) climb the tower in the piazza for an amazing view of Tuscany.

Be sure to get over to Murano while in Venice and shoot some of the glass blowers in action.

I have been to Italy many times. Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions.

Florence is amazing and personally I would add a day there and cut if off Milan but others might disagree (Firenze is my fav area in Italy, so don't ask me). Got to climb the dome in Florence and the museum is amazing IF you have a lot of time (queues are bad but you might be okay that early, I suspect because of that David thingi :). Hit the river bank for the old bridge in contrast to the fortune in the shops on it.

In Milan visit Vittorio Emanuel.... not bad pic location :-)

I loved the Capri island (Ana-Capri if you have the chance is in the hills of the island - little like Greece); Catch the local bus down from AC... forget about the camera, just worth the ride for the experience :-). If you like the tourist trap, look for the blue grotto.

I would stop by Pompei again, although there is another less crowded smaller ruin like it close by... sorry I forget the name.

What can you say about Rome? It's a little busy :-) Has a few nice ruins in the centre but you might need something to swat the tourists away - not sure about March but I suspect it will not be empty. That little St Peters is pretty good too.

I was less enthused about Pisa.... The old church near the leaning tower is pretty cool and invisible to most people.

Edit: Just reread and you might be able to tell I hate been a tourist & prefer traveler. Guess that's why I tend to go to places for months rather then days when I had the chance :-)

Also, while in Florence, call ahead to Academia and Uffuzi Gallery and you can schedule/reserve entrance times and bypass the queues.

all the cities that you write are good, rome,venice,florence-pisa,milano in the order of photographic importance (this is my opinion). all the cities are in the middle-north of italy, in the southern italy napoli is a good place for photographs(and there are the island of the gulf ischia, procida, capri). the main italian islands are sicily and sardinia that have a great natural environment. there are many little town that have an unique photographic environment and the seascapes are beautiful.
good travel in italy :)

Sorry Rob
The Firenzens/Florentines would probably dip me in plaster if they found out I was giving away this "secret". I gotta take care of the DPCers, though.

I have to agree with the posts below and say that you should spend more time in Florence.

I spent upwards of a week there (visited while studying in Bologna last summer) and that wasn't even enough. It has a great nightlife, though at times you may become agitated by the throngs of American students living there... Still, it rivals Rome for drinking goodness and beauty and certainly has a ton of historical/cultural sites of note. Milan and Venice on the other hand are definitely worth seeing but don't offer enough for an extended stay - I saw both in a day and was satisfied, thats just my opinion though! Do climb the main tower in Venice for sunset. Do hang out on the Ponte Vecchio or Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset in Florence.

In Rome, definitely go to the Forum & Pallatine (sp?) Hill. Also, as a general rule, I'd say stop into every church you walk past, even if its not on a tourist map. I'm not a big religion guy but I was always amazed at how beautiful even the smaller churches were.

Bologna is centrally located in Italy - if you have a chance to stop there for a day in between Florence and Milan i'd say go walk around- its a beautiful medieval town that really has a feel all its own (due to the "portici" that line the streets) and is home to Europe's oldest university, and has a real punky/leftist, counter-culture vibe to it. It's also known for its food, which is pretty amazing all around.

Also, you probably can't extend your trip or squeeze more into it, but Cinque Terre on the west coast of the country is a stunning area to hike and photograph... it's a string of 5 old fishing hamlets connected by cliff paths along the Mediterranean. It is a decent train-ride away and would likely require 2 nights, but was well worth it.

You picked a great time to go to Italy, tourist season really made Rome and Florence a pain in the ass at times. I hope this helps and enjoy your trip, I'm sure you will have an absolute blast.

*edit for hyperlinks to me photos :D

Thanks so much for all the information and advice :) all will be taken into consideration as only Rome has been finalised, so we can alter the time we stay in the other cities :)

As Italian based near to Milan I agree with most of you.

Rome (3days at least),
Pisa and Siena (1 day mainly Siena)
Florence ( 2 days)
Milan (1 day... FULL!)
Venice (personally, 1 full day would be enough)

On the way you could add Verona or Padova before Venice
Or visit some small wonderful cities in Tuscany like Volterra, San Gimignano, Pienza, Montalcino... wine, wine, wine ;)

My husband and I just went on our trip in september of this year! Florence is AMAZING. That was probably my favorite city, along with Sorrento. Absolutely beautiful, easy to walk around, and a TON to see! I'll try to dig up some more details and post them later.
