Can any one tell me if they think this lens will be a good match with a Nikon D40x? Is this a good multi purpose lens, escpecially for taking shots of auto racing. I worry about the weight and stability. the VR version is out of my range. Or is the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR AF-S a better fit?

80-200mm will work fine but you have to focus manually
18-200mm will focus automatically but it is not good for low light situations

The D40x does not have a lens focusing motor inside it, so any lens other than a DX lens has to be focused manually.

Tamron and other manufacturers are getting with the program, but I don't know if they yet have any on the shelf.

Incorrect -- any lens other than an AF-S lens has to be focused manually. There are non-DX lenses with AF-S.

ETA: Any Sigma lens with HSM designation will autofocus with the D40/D40x as well.

the 80-200 f2.8 will work fine with your camera as long as you follow what Creature said.

I'm hoping to get this lens as soon as possible but it has the VR option. Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED I've talked to a couple of different people that have or have had the f/2.8 is and their quote... "just awesome".

Here is a list of D40 compatible lenses. Note that the current version of the 80-200 f/2.8 is not on the list, but the 70-200 VR is, as is the 80-200 AF-S, which you might be able to find used. All of them are amazing lenses.

Seems the DPC description of this lens is a little off. It is actually an AF-S lens and the "DG" is a mystery to me ... there should be a "G" after the f/2.8 to designate that it is a "G" lens (no aperture ring).

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR

And yes, it is an awesome lens, I've used it.

Decision made. I just ordered the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR AF-S. But I am still hoping to get the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG IF-ED before our trip to Spain and Protugal in April.

The list is for lenses that are 100% compatable including AF. Don't count out a lot of great glass just cause of AF. Many applications like macro, its better to manual focus anyway.

Its hard to find since Nikon quit making it, but there exists an AF-S version of the 80-200 2.8 that will AF on your camera.

Thanks hyperfocal, actually my wife wants to get a macro lens soon. Any suggestions on a purely macro lens? I agree, it doesn't have to be AF. We mainly wanted to AF for racing pics.
