Sorry, I am all for OOBIE nominations but how can you say this "clearly meets the challenge" when the challenge description read:

We're talking about physical masks here, things people put on (or paint on) to hide some or all of their faces. They can be elaborate, even baroque, or they can be simple and clean. Find or create a mask, and photograph someone wearing it this week.

I got to agree with Karen on this one. If the challenge were only to depict a mask, this would be gloriously out-of-the-box; but since the challenge requires photographing someone "wearing" the mask, this is off-the-reservation...

You both have a point, but I am not going to withdraw my OOBIE nomination because of an excessively anal challenge description.

ROTFLMAO!

May I make a suggestion? Give out a new award called the EXACTA (Excessively Anal Challenge Topic Award) to such challenges as meet your criteria :-)

I would run out of awards as fast as I can make them... :P

FWIW, I completely ignored/overlooked that piece of BS tacked on as chum for the DNMC sharks -- it reminds me of the trick test teachers will sometimes give out, which starts out "Read all instructions before starting" and the "instruction" on the last page says to write your name on the test and turn it in blank ...

I'm surprised to hear this from someone on SC; basically saying to ignore the challenge description?! Challenge descriptions are part of the "challenge". If you want more of a free-for-all, then perhaps you should attempt to ruffle some feathers and just do away with descriptions all together. Until that happens it's my opinion that the challenge descriptions are there for a good reason.

I in no way want to discourage discussion and debate, BUT I'd like to take this moment to remind people this is a thread for nominations, and if this discussion about challenge descriptions and what is OOBIE/DNMC has more life in it, please start up a discussion thread about the issue and continue it there. I'd like to keep this thread to highlighting nominees (with full DPC consensus, or not), as much as that is possible.

Oh, I'm only describing what I did, not what I'd recommend anyone else do. Also, it was probably more "overlooked" than ignored ... by the time I'd read three lines saying that the challenge was "masks" thought I'd had enough to get the idea.

I had a mannekin wearing a mask which was wearing a mask -- and it had the spooky look I wanted -- so I entered it to see what people thought. I rarely worry about the numerical score my photos get; a comment like "I liked it but I had to reduce the score because DNMC IMO" is an acceptable result to me.

The topic was "Masks" -- if there was really a need to limit the topic further, it should have been titled "People Wearing Masks" or "Masks Without People" or whatever specific limitation was desired. As it is, the title and description once again send conflicting messages about the desired range of subjects and interpretations.

An OOBIE sort-of by definition has to be a low-scoring, off-center interpretation.

No problem, I just don't want to get too off track here. If anyone starts a new discussion thread on the topic, feel free to post a link here directing everyone to it.

thanks!

I was thinking about something while voting in the last few challenges, and came to the conclusion that if I feel that an image doesn't meet the challenge, I may comment on it, but won't score it. My decision was completely reinforced by this photo, as reading the comments it is clear that many people DID see the mask. (even if nobody is physically wearing it.) I'll readily admit that I didn't see it until AFTER the challenge. Food for thought.

I think I am saying I think it is a picture of the night sky and met the challenge perfectly well and did not deserve the battering it received.

I am also saying (again) that this thread is for nominations, and as such is partly intended as an uplift and recognition for those photos that didn't please the majority - usually this means the image is OOBIE, but sometimes it's not only about that.

Whatever the reason for the nomination, it is true that many people are pleased to see their image get a nod here. Now, imagine how pleasing it is to get a post here recognizing your image (which usually did not do well in voting), and then have several posts following it that essentially says "WTF?". Frankly, we all get enough of that in voting, and I don't believe it has a place here, in this thread.

We are all allowed to have our opinions. We're even allowed to discuss it. But I would ask again, please, to start a new thread if you want to discuss such things, as this thread is intended for a different purpose than debating the worthiness of an image. I'm not the SC, so I can't say "stay on topic" with authority, but I am asking if everyone would respect my request.

thank you,
Karen

Actually, as "OP" you *do* have authority to ask that the thread remain on topic.

Sorry to clutter your thread, however, if you take a look at recent postings in here (going back just one page in fact) you'll see comments made by several (yourself included) as a follow-up (and not all positive) to the image "nominated". LaMas, posthumous as well...

I'd quote some of those specifically, but THAT would really clutter things up. :-)

We're going to be awash in OOBIE awards about two weeks from now - I've collected all the nominees for their respective weeks for voting and will be distributing awards after the voters weigh in. Stay tuned on that, sorry for the delay.

In the meantime, the current nomination period for OOBIEs runs from June 8-14, with noms going on to the vote on June 15. Still a couple more days to go for this latest round of nominations. The YAPPIE noms of course are open for the full month.

Post your nominees for an OOBIE or a YAPPIE here!
