I shot during takeoff and landing when I flew to Edmonton but on the way home I was asked to turn it off. I haven't tried since.

You probably just haven't been seen... if they see you, they'll tell you to put it away.

In any case, in the US, FAA regulations classify digital cameras as an "approved electronic device" in the same category as CD players and laptop computers, and subject them to the same restrictions on when they may be used.

CJ's right. The guideline is basically this: if it has a battery, it must be turned off under 10,000 feet.

They can be sneaky about it. Haven't you ever noticed anything odd when you have them over to your place to visit? Like, the room is in good shape when your all in it together at the start of the evening, but if you step out to use the washroom it's in a shambles when you return? And your friends are just sitting there as if nothing happened, picking fleas & ticks off of each other's hairy backs.
