I have a light kit (DynaLites) and they are triggered remotely via Pocket Wizards. So my question is, since the Pocket Wizard is taking up the hot shoe on my Canon 5D, how would I also fire off a few 580 flashes at the same time?

Thanks!

if you set the 580 to slave will it fire when it sees the other lights fire? If not put the other lights in slave mode and have the flash on your hot shoe and see what happens.

I don't think anything has an "eye" that can work with each other like that. It seems like it should be something as simple as that, but I'm stumped....

You can either put a hotshoe to synch cord on your hotshoe (the PW can go on top) and then attach a sync cord that, and run it to your 580ex (depending on what version it is, you might also need another piece). Or you can get a piece that connects to your 580ex and then attach another pocket wizard to it. It will fire just like the DynaLites then.

hope that helps

Well I know that my 430 flash will fire my alien bees when they are on slave and that the AB's will fir the 430EX flash when it is on slave.

I don't think the slave mode on the 580 responds to light from other flashes. I believe it uses Canon's proprietary infared system to trigger the slave system. So you'll need Canon's IR transmitter or another 580 to fire another 580 on slave mode. Not sure how you can use the Pocket Wizard with the 580 however.

Would this work....

I put Canon's IR Transmitter on the camera's hot shoe, plug the pocket wizard in the side of the camera, and just tape it to the camera. (it doesn't have to be on the hot shoe...it just has to plugged into the pc socket on the side, right?) This will allow the IR to fire the flashes, and the PC-connected pocket wizards to fire the DinaLites...

Is that feasable?

That's pretty ingenious. Thanks for pointing that out.

It worked! I'll have to take a picture of this insane set-up and post it later tonight. Off to shoot some buddhist monks for my documentary...thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone!

Paramount has has come up with a way to mount and connect the pocket wizard on camera and leaving the hot shoe free for the strobe. It looks pretty cool. I'm going to buy one. //www.paramountcords.com/strobedolly.asp

Looks nice, but $50 for that little piece of plastic? I'd rather attach it to my lens hood for free
