From my very local little one-a-week paper; this is in reference to the girls' basketball team at the high school my son graduated from. Read carefully.

Headline: "Lancers Have One Goal: State Tournament Birth"

Subhead: "With a wealth of returning players, Lee has high expectations this season."

Quote from boxed summary: "Outlook: This season is poised to be one of the most memorable, and historic, in the history of Lee girls basketball."

First paragraph: "A fine line exists between being good and being cocky. Lee is looking to straddle that line this season ..."

Quote from a player: "We are definitely going big this year as this is the last year of us being able to do it ... Experience will definitely help us this year."

Insufficient proofreading or intentional double entendre? Or maybe I just spent too many teenage years in New Jersey and am making connections most normal people wouldn't from a one-letter typo ;-)

I think you are reading too much into this and possibly even looking for something that isn't really there.

LOL!! Maybe one of the young ladies is pregnant and this is how she's breaking it to her parents... :-)

Okay, am not an English major, but usually do know the defintion of words and should it not be "berth" - meaning slot or place (as on a ship) and not birth - meaning the act of coming into life? Just a thought, and possibly incorrect!

Is there any possibility you could post a link to the entire article?

Yup. Which I would have found funny all by itself, but then there were all those other quotes which could be interpreted in several ways ...

I will have to wait till next week to see if anyone writes a letter to the editor about any of it. Seems like there's always someone ready to take everything very seriously and be offended!

IMO this was done on purpose.

I checked their website and it wasn't on there yet. Remember this is just a little weekly local thing, so they're not as well-funded as the big newspapers.

You're welcome to try and find it; the newspaper is The Springfield Connection in Virginia.
