I was recently watching a YouTube video on how easy it is to fake UFO pics, and that got me to thinking what a great topic this would be for DPChallenge. UFO photos can certainly be one of the more controversial topics in pop culture.
For this challenge, "UFO" would be taken to be "an Unidentified craft, apparently of extraterrestrial origin". I could see this being a a double-challenge:
UFO - Minimal Editing: this would be a tribute to UFO photos of days gone by (e.g., 1950's). Use fishing line, throw a hubcap, whatever you have to do to photograph a craft, like they did it before the digital era. Re-creations from "classic" UFO lore welcome.
UFO - Expert Editing: this would be a no holds barred digital manipulation challenge, where one could use every digital trick available in 2007 to create a believable UFO picture.
Extra rule- Photos of REAL extra-terrestrial spacecraft are allowed in either challenge, as long as all other rules are followed.
If you're unfamiliar with what's "out there", take a look at this page.

I'm gonna second this idea.
BTW, did anyone watch Larry King last night? Apparently, a few dozen people in Stephenville, TX saw a mile long 'object' flying thru the sky. Here's the NPR link. |

I'm not saying whether it is faked or real - but I've always had my suspicions about this picture

I wonder what the real closer horse is thinking? Maybe he's saddened by his impending doom or maybe he's thinking 'what is this guy doing in my field?'. |

What I find amusing is the similar quality of photos between the 1920’s and 2007, with the only exception being the cleverly built RC model. |

But if it is an Unidentified Craft, apparently of extraterrestrial origin, would that be UCAoETO instead of UFO?
;P |

Great idea. I'd personally prefer it as a Basic or Advanced challenge (not a fan of Expert). In a similar vein - ghosts (just like your suggestion re UFO fakes, don't you remember all the ghostly fakes? Might also be easier with long exposures)

Redneck-- I had this same observation... i.e., considering the HUGE advances in imaging
(particularly consumer/point-'n-shoot cams) since the 1940's, one would think that even
if there were only one "legit" UFO pic per year, there would be a continuous stream of
image quality improvement. However, most "UFO pics" taken in the 2000's bear a marked
resemblance to those grainy images from 1947... even the outright fakes, generally speaking,
aren't getting any better!
P.S.--nice to see some activity in this thread, hadn't checked in a few weeks... so
who knows, maybe we'll see it... ;-)

YEAH... I am for it. I have seen many UFS's lately, usually they come after my 5th can of BUD... I don't know how they managed to land on my nose, but I keep them away so far... even though broke my nose a few times. I want to take their pictures and prove it to you... I am not sure if I can find the shutter release on my camera, or my camera all together... but I will try my best. I might be 5th or 6th large; I probably should use a second shooter... Drinks on me :P |

If some think "UFO" is too narrow a topic, then something
like "The Unexplained" would be another way to approach
this... with the realization that pretty much whatever one
submits (UFOs, ghosts, big foot, crop circles, ESP, Elvis, etc.)
will be "faked" in some way. Still, might be interesting to
see what the forum could come up with from back issues of
The Star or Enquirer... |

So does this mean that if your spaceship can be identified as a used pie tin its DNMC? :>P
Great idea. Let's do it. I was just watching an old episode of Naked Science with my daughter this weekend that had a segment showing people doing this. |

I read on CNN that the flying saucer house on Signal Mt. outside of Chattanooga, Tenn. is for sale. I use to drive past that house a lot in the 80's. You don't even have to be at the right angle... it fits the UFO mode perfectly. :D
