I will be in Charlotte, NC next week (Sunday-2rd through Sunday-9th) for a week-long training session. I would like some ideas for photo ops there. Since I'll be tied up all day M-F, what do you locals recommend for going out on the weekend to capture some images?

Where are some cool places to go for photos? What about any special events--anything going on?

Saturday would be a good day to visit the Carolina Raptor Center. I think that Discovery Place still has the Body Worlds exhibit going on... there is also an Imax theater there...

Thanks. The Raptor center looks promising.

However, I was in another city recently and the Body Worlds exhibit was there. When I went there, they had a "no photography" rule in effect. It was just for that exhibit because you could photography other areas of the museum. So, I'm thinking it would be the same at the Discovery Place.

I too went to Charlotte for business last year and it is a glorious town. In some parts of town, the architecture is too beautiful to describe so no matter where you go...don't forget to LOOK UP!!! :)

One of the websites I used to find things to do with my personal time is VisitCharlotte.com. There are a lot of things to do and a listing of events happening in town. Check it out. I did notice as I went there just now that the Lipizzaner Stallions are going to be there on the 2nd. They are a treat but I don't know if flash photography or photography in general is allowed. Still something to see!!!

You might try Google-ing and see what you can find. I did that went I went to Seattle earlier this year and I was able to plan for a lot more than I could ever possibly do in one lifetime! ;)

Good luck! And have a blast!!

How's the safety around Charlotte? Especially for a guy walking around with camera gear? How about at night, too?

It's about like other cities, I guess. There are okay parts and parts you don't leave anything unattended. Downtown, during the day, walking around with gear probably isn't a problem

If you've got transportation, look up the US National Whitewater Center USNWC for some good whitewater action shooting.

Head to the NODA district (North Davidson Ave) for some artsy/city life - it's a very small area but interesting building fronts and unique characters.

If you want to do some nature shooting, look up the McDowell Nature Park or the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens.

If you are only staying right downtown, lots of fountains all over the city - I've shot those quite a bit.

About 10 yrs ago, Billy Graham build a Christian themed amusement park somewhere near town. It's long since gone out of business but I've heard that the relics of the park still exist - I know there is a wikipedia link but I don't have it handy right now.

I'm about 10 mi. south of Charlotte, PM me if you'd like to discuss more details.

Sure you are not thinking about Jim Bakker's Heritage USA?

Yeah, that probably is it - with the Billy Graham Pkwy and campus here, that's the first thing that popped to mind
