Hi everyone, I was thinking of picking up Nikon's 50mm 1.8 as a standard portrait lens. I see a lot of good reviews about it, but was just wondering for those that have and use it what their thoughts are.
Do you use it a lot?
What do you think of it?
Any help would be great

| I doubt you'll hear much of anything bad about this lens. Most everyone who has one will tell you it's the best lens you can get for the money. They're only about $100-ish, and they're super sharp and perform well in low light. |

For $100, the 50mm f/1.8 can't be beat as a first portrait lens. Definitely get one and work with it.
I spent some time this weekend taking test shots with my different primes, to see which were the best choices for different kinds of portraits. What I found was that the 50mm 1.8 was a good, competent portrait lens, although for really tight closeups, it was a little short. My subject's nose was pretty big with that lens up close.
My favorite overall was the 85mm f/1.8. Besides working better for closeups, it just had a creamier look to it overall.

| I have one and it's an excellent lens - cheap, fast and sharp. Only complaint is that it's a little short for close-up portraits, but it's definitely worth getting one. I even use mine reverse mounted for macro work. |

| I took a ten trip to Bali, I used two lenses, the Sigma 10-20 and the 50 mm 1.8D for 95% of my shots. I had two bodies sp these were on almost exclusively. The other lens was was the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Which also worked nicely, but I really like the 50 mm. :) |

The general sentiment amongst this crowd is that it gets an A. Some say they feel like it's cheaply built, but I don't think that good glass needs to be heavy, especially when a prime is supposed to be small anyway. I love mine.

| This is probably the best value lens you can get for a Nikon - so just go for it! :-) |

Have you checked out some of the shots taken with it?
I say go for it! I love having it, and it's small and easy to carry around! |

Thanks everyone, it seems that this purchase is a no brainer. I was thinking it is a worth while lens, however it's always great to hear from other photographers before deciding.
