Here's a challenge to all DPCers. The last Texture Challenge had a total of 4972 comments. The highest amount of comments made for an individual challenge is Free Study at 6177 comments.

One of the best ways to learn is by commenting. Being new or if you just bought a camera doesn't mean you don't have an opinion on a photo. You may like something or hate something about a shot why not comment and let the photographer know?

Let's go for a record and get more then 10,000 comments for Texture II. Just another one of my crazy ideas. What do you guys think?

After doing some very rough math, I have come to the conclusion that if each that person submitted (considering about an average of 200) a shot and left approximately 10 comments apiece that it could be done. I generally try to leave 20 comments a challenge or so. I haven't been as good about it lately, but something like this could get me back into the habit.

By the way, I think it is a worthy effort and it's a great idea!

Perhaps those on dial-up connections could type out the common phrases first - like 'out of focus', 'doesn't meet the challenge' and 'WOW!' - then simply copy and paste in order to save time and money. ;)

If each person that submits (200) leaves 10 comments each, thats 200x10=2000. Unless I'm missing something, that means its more like 35 comments each to break the "record", and 50 each to reach faidoi's 10,000 mark. Of course, usually more people vote than enter....

I'm all for it! I havent been leaving many comments as of late but I will if everyone else will! I will bc faidoi suggested it.

Just a suggestion to get people confortable with making and receiving comments. Think it would be fun to work as a community to help each other to learn.

Back during the Right Angles challenge I challenge myself to comment on all 250 pictures. This was before I even submitted a shot for the challenges, but it was to get me comfortable at making comments.

Whoa!!! Just realized my math was quite off there. Woops. I meant to say 50x200. Yeah, that'd be rather tough. I am going to do some re-calculating. Thanks for catching that.

Forget it, screw the math. I am just going to leave a TON of worthy comments and urge everyone else to do the same. That seems to be the most realistic approach. Good idea.

BTW, I wasn't knocking the idea, or meaning to belittle anyone's math skills. :) Just wanted to set the expectations of what it would take high enough.

Oh no, I wasn't saying you were belittling my math skills, I was being sarcastic, I was trying to figure out something with all the numbers and just gave up, that's all. ;) It's hard to convey emotions through the typed word.

I do so pledge, and this time I am going to try to not just tell peolpe why I liked their shots, but to comment on some images that I rated highly and an equal number that I rated poor to midling. I encourage others to do the same. You don't have to rip what you don't like, be polite, praise somethin ("cute cat", "I like the color of the flower") but let them know why you didn't rate it highly. This is supposed to be a learning experience, not just affirmation for the winners.

If every user/member all made 1 comment we could make it to 17,030 :)

Friendly nudge :)

I'm already on it! I commented on ALL Garage Art entries and I'm 64% done on the Letting Go challenge. I figured, if I want everybody to comment on me, I have to comment on everybody.

What's going to happen to the quality of the comments, if quantity is the primary criterium?

With the people who give longer more involved critiques they will probably give the same types of comments. If the comment is too short, not helpful then simple don't mark it helpful.

The main reason for the exercise is to try to give a chance for some of the lurkers or newbies to join in the community and become comfortable on making and receiving comments.

For the people that complain about no one making comments on their shots I hope they would get in there and also make comments. If we all just sat here and wait for comments not too many people will recieve them.

It gives us time to think a little bit on each photograph. I start with the things I like about the picture, and then the things I dislike. I've found that it takes about 15 minutes a day to comment and vote on all challenge entries and even have spare time left before the voting period is over.

For a decent comment, depending on the photo, I need about five minutes to look and study it (some more, some less). On a good day, it may take five minutes to write down what I see, another five to record my thoughts and feelings. I might take another five minutes to amend what I wrote, because of what I learnt while I wrote it.

Then, it takes me five more minutes to edit my comment to make it palatable. All in all: twenty-five minutes.

What if I want to download the photo to try one of my suggestions in the comment? What if I need to look something up? Even if my comment consists of a single word, how long do I look at the shot until I know this is what I want to say about it?

Good photos, to me, are specimen I compare to other specimen I have seen or remember. I weigh them, measure them, probe them, study them. It takes time.

Ok critiques arent easy for me! I do like to comment specially on pictures I like,,,and occasionallly a picture is good but could use a tad of something......Good training for serious art and photography students,,so I guess this time I will try my honest effort at actually giving critiques! Atleast all 20% of voting!
Good idea Faidoi!

With over a day to go, Textures II is at 223 entries, and I won't be surprised if it becomes a reord in itself for number of entries ... still feeling keen to comment on every one?
