Don't you need time to fish out any gear that has accidentally dropped into the river? :-)

Hey, you Nikonians need some more of your bretheren!! So far, there are only 6 Nikonians and 1 Pentaxian. But there are 9 Canonites. Seems like we may take over the world haha.

:)

my friend is a Nikonian too so that is one more, so you've only got us by 2 and Nikons can stand up to those odds

Yup - sounding like a great GTG. Just an FYI - it's a common misconception that sunrise is the golden light when in fact it is the approximate 30 minutes before (twilight) that is the golden light. Sunrises are for the hopefully spectacular sunrise itself. Sorry - lecture mode off....
I'll hopefully be able to drag my SO up that early - she expressed an interest and will be coming down from Nashville. A suggestion was made for Sunday at Lookout. I've personally never been impressed with Point Park - especially the $$ to get in. I would like to propose no less than 3 other locations that I consider superior (IMHO of course). They could even be done in the presented order.
1) Craven house and "War of Aggression" park (some of y'all may have been brainwashed into calling it a Civil War). Marvelous view, interesting artifacts and monuments.
2) Sunset Rock. Just a short piece down from Point Park - breathtaking view. The path down is moderate - so think of that coming back up - it's gets me breathing heavy. There is limited parking but we could park at Point Park and everyone pile into a vehicle or two to Sunset Rock - which has, I believe 8 parking spots - of which usually at least 1 or 2 are taken.
1&2) Note - you can actually hike a path from 1 all the way up to 2. I would suggest that as a more spring time excursion for the wildflowers. I like it because you pass a section of cliff that is popular with rock climbers.
3) Go further down Lookout to where they hangglide. You can also take the road to teh bottom where they land and also where they tow tandem fliers with their ultralights.
Looking forward to it!!!
Jon

Craven House is a GREAT idea!! We can also shimmy over to Ruby Falls parking lot and go to the Eagles nest :) Lovely view from there :)

I believe the Point Park that Billy is talking about is the one that is free. It has a huge playground that looks like a fairytale castle hehe

Never been to Sunset Rock, but I'm up for anything :)

This was taken on a mini trip with rex HANG GLIDERS:

Well I am just going to be along for the ride and let you all decide where we go. Just let me know how much money I will need. Also I was going to drive my truck but with the way things are sounding I need to bring the wife's Expedition. It seats 8 with room for gear. Just let me know.

I usually have trouble with the parking lot at Sunset Rock. Unless they've changed it lately, most of the 8 spots are one hour parking. By the time you walk down to the overlook and back up, a lot of that hour has most likely passed. The rangers that patrol the area have no trouble handing out tickets either. As far as rock climbing, the area right around Sunset Rock is great for that also. I've spent quite a few hours hanging off a rope there.

There is also a trail (I think a couple miles) from point park to sunset rock that runs just below the band of cliffs. On the point park end there are lots of metal steps down and on the sunset rock end there is a trail with stone steps.

Heres a link to the National Park Service website for Point Park and Chickamauga Battlefield including directions, fees and such.

Bubba Jon - thanks for the tip about the sunrise! I'm not much of an early riser so I'm not much up on that. I'd still like to see the sunrise, so I'll be there by 7:30.

Those ideas sound great as well! Would anyone have a problem with the early risers meeting up early & talking photos off the bridge, then when everyone meets at 9:00 am I'll have directions & info on all the suggested sites, and we can take a vote? Or do you feel like we need to nail down the rest of the day before the date?

Ya, I say get everyone together first. That is the main objective LOLOL

I got my day off approved today so with that and my kitchen pass things are looking like i am going to be able to join you all on this adventure. I wont be able to leave until 6pm Friday and am hoping to drive to somewhere around Clarksville then on into Chattanooga Sat morning. But i probably wont make it there until 11am. So i am wondering how we can meet up with you guys. I was wondering if someone would be willing to share a cell ph number so we can call when we get into town to find out where you are? I will be glad to send my number to any of you that are willing to get in contact with us.
Thanks, Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Dave

also what temperatures are you expecting?
01/12/2008 09:26:49 AM · #140
43 for a high and 28 for a low. Sunny skies predicted for both Sat and Sun.

Looking like a great weekend. Look forward to meeting/remeeting some of you.

I'm happy to share mine with whomever, but not in public. If everyone could pm me their cell phone, and say if they want to share, I'll put together a list & pm everyone back with the list of those who want to share, including my own.

Hi! I have the cell phone #'s of

rex
griz21 - later than 9, will call on the way
wetland - Sunrise

and will share mine with anyone else willing to pm me theirs.

Also, if you could note whether you plan to be with the sunrise group or later that would be really helpful (I won't end up calling you at 7:30 am to see where you are!)

Jojo, checkin in.... count me in for the sunrise group ;)

Glenda & I went downtown yesterday morning, dragging our lil redhead along with us... it was freaking cold! EVERYONE should realize that next weekend is expected to be even colder, and be absolutely sure to bring gloves / earmuffs / hats / etc. You will NOT want to stand on the bridge for long, and probably not be happy with anything outdoors UNLESS you have these items! Now, I also want to emphasize that we had a lot of fun, and I'm even MORE anxious for our gathering than ever! :D

Since we're planning to meet @ the Stone Cup, we stopped in there for breakfast. Now, they don't have an online menu but, thanks to yours truly & the magic of the internet, I present a photo of your culinary choices! (well, the menu, and my particular choice of sustenance LOL)

ETA - Who else wants to meet up Friday night, and where would you like to meet? i THINK we'll be staying DownTown on Friday & Saturday nights, but plan to visit with Eric & Christina either way... anyone want to join us?

(pssst - Eric! what time will you guys be coming up, and would you like to try what we've talked about that night & be totally ready for the next day?)

We'll probably get there around 4 to avoid all rush hours. I am working the night before, so I'll probably nap for a couple of hours if that's cool with you guys. We are staying at the Days Inn on Cummings HWY. Probably seedy, but we got it for $35 a night on priceline. There wasn't anything reasonable downtown, and I made some pretty big bids on the Read House. Oh well, we have a place to sleep.

I don't get off work 'till 4:30 but I'll try to come down and meet you guys. We'll see!!

count me in for the sunrise group. What time do I need to be there?

Oh Billy no need for gloves I was going to have Eric push the shutter button for me.

Nah, I'd better not touch a Canon. I might be blamed for the next time it has to be sent off to service. ;)

Just wanted to let y'all know that unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. I'll be thinking of you though & hope to make the next one!

(I really wanted to be there, but I've got family coming in from out of town - and that HAD to pick that weekend! GRRR!)
