Certainly not, but I think that you would agree that not having the facilities to serve the customer would mean simply not taking the job.

I mean, would you tell a car company that you'd take pictures for them if you couldn't fit their car in your studio? No. Would you do nude sessions in an area that probably wouldn't afford privacy? No.

It's simply the principle of the thing is all.

I wouldn't mind having a studio in one of the nicer malls around, but there's already one in each that I know of besides the department store ones. But there's certainly a difference between the guys in the outlet mall, and the one in Oak Park next to the Nordstrom's... ya know. Slightly different clientelle, and rent too.

Even chain studios aren't all bad. We have several Olan Mills portraits that are very well done. We also took my kids to Sears for many years for their "growing up" photos before they got school shots done. I was very pleased with them for the price.

I've seen very good shots come from these sorts of places and some very disappointing shots come from private studios. In any case, it's a very client satisfaction oriented industry and this studio should somehow make it up to the client. Even with a group that large, they could have done better than what is shown here.

Everyone makes mistakes, but it's how the mistake is handled that distinquishes professional service from fly-by-nights IMO.

It's kind of like was said before, they didn't have the space and shouldn't have booked it. Once they got there, they should have apologized and said they didn't have the facilities to serve them.

There were many points along the line here where a conscientious business would have made things right here.

The people should have been staggered (using chairs or some props) so the folks in the back row aren't lost or half cut off. I think the photo looks terrible, they should at least have had the ones in the front row sitting down etc.

It reminds me of those competitions like "How many people can we squeeze into the Mini-Cooper??"

Plus, they don't look like they are are in focus.

I'd have a reshoot or get my money back.

I said nothing about small studios. And YES YES YES they had a booked appt with the studio for that many people. They didnt JUST show up. It was booked a few months in advance.

The SAME studio that did their portratis (a chain) also did some of my daughter nearly 1 year ago that I AM STILL to this day trying to get them done right. They have re-shot her 3 times and re-printed 4 times. They CANNOT get it right. They have cropped the top of her head off, her arms, her feet..etc... They have printed blurry pics, they zoomed in on a pic to correct a crop mistake and the photo pixelated big time. Horrible shoddy work.

It has been my opinion that chain photography studios do not offer the best quality work. I always recommend small studios or individual photographers for large family portraits etc... I dont think that many mall photographers are trained very well. THey offer no experience necessary and pay very minimal pay.

I understand and exactly why I don't envy studio owners. It's a tough business.

I would have simply turned them away, if they would not do a location shoot. There are worse things than not getting a job, ie the photo in question.

The question is, is your friend happy. I have had clients pick shots that I did not like at all, however their paying the bill and if they demand a shot that I don't like they get it. I try to encourage what I perceive as the better image, but the client likes what they like.

I would suggest a different location, and probably give them a discount on our location fees if they agreed.

If they insisted it would after that offer, and yes I'd do their picture, but I sure wouldn't be happy about it.

This is a service business. ANYONE with a digital camera can take a picture... what we have to do is do it better than they can themselves. And make them FEEL like they are having fun, and it's something they want to do again and that they are getting what they want.

Don't take offense, C'Anne. Most of us are just having fun at the expense of the feelings of people we hope are not here. :)

I would tend to agree that it was their mistake to go to a mall studio for a group portrait that size.

I would be interested to know if they were advised against doing the shoot there. Are you saying you would advise them against it and then do it if they insisted?

No I would not, I would suggest they went on location. I have sent away families when thier children were obviously NOt into the idea of having their pictures taken too. If you can't do the job DON'T.

We don't offer just in studio shots. We're not Sears or JC Penneys or Walmart. My staff is a group of artists who may not be perfect, may not be ribbon winners, BUT they do their best to please the customer. And we have our customers sign a copy of what we consider the best shot of the setting to prove it.

No one was insulting you Chesire. But you do have to admit the photo was hardly professional. I doubt you would have sent a paying client home with this photo.

I understand that you are upset, but if this group scheduled with you, and you knew you didn't have the facilities or equipment to shoot them, would you still schedule them and shoot? And if you did, would it look like the shot that was posted?

I'm just curious.

I own a mall studio and I would be horrified to have such a large group of people show up. We are not set up for that size group, and I wouldn't want to take their picture in studio. A group that large really begs to be done outdoors, or on location.

However. That does NOT mean we do shoddy work, or that we don't care or that we cheat people. We bend over backwards to make sure everyone who goes out the door is happy with the prints they receive.

What a shame. I think this is worth a full refund or at the very least, a reshoot with a more experienced photographer. A group this size (can you imagine what they went through to schedule everyone?)

It's also a shame when you see ads for some of the mall studios like Sears, JCPenney, Target, etc. Advertise for photographers...no experience necessary.

Amen, however I must be thankful these mall studios exist otherwise we might be out of a job. Because if that is professional, I'm the photography copperfield. :)

A photo studio around here had some photos on display to promote their business. They were decent enough, though I was slightly underwhelmed. What really bothered me though was the use of selective desaturation in some of them - desaturated people where only their blue denim clothing was in colour, for example. I always thought the purpose of selective desat was to keep the most important part in colour!

But I've never seen anything as horrible as the photo you've posted here. I really feel for your friend getting landed with that.

Yes, the friend has the copyright to the photos to do whatever she wants with them. She is NOT happy with them, but they dont have time to get that whole family back together before Christmas for another shot.
