Hello all-

I recently bought a set of ebay triggers in the hopes of getting my 420EX off my camera. However, when I received them I realized that there must be some other kind of adapter to connect the receiver to the flash, since my flash doesn't have any sort of port on it.

Can anyone tell me what kind of adapter I'd need to make this work?

You'll need a hotshoe to PC Terminal adapter.

The problem is going to be the fact that the 420EX lacks any on-board manual control. Once you get it to fire, it will only fire at full power.

Depends on the jack on your trigger. Mine came with a phono-style jack, like this one:

Others have the PC jack, like this one:

Depending on which your trigger has, you'll need a hot-shoe adaptor (which accepts the correct plug) to fire the 420ex.

If you can't find such a hot-shoe, just cut the cords off and solder the wires. =)

Also, as Spaz pointed out, your only power control will be moving the flash unit around. A flash with a power control on it is more suitable to off-camera work. Still, it would be a starting place. =)

Yeah, I'm very quickly realizing the problems of the 420. I'm looking around for some older Nikon flashes, but in the meantime I figured it would be helpful to play around with what I've got.

smurfguy- It's definitely the second one. I'd solder the wires if I had any idea of what to solder them to! (And I do own a soldering iron that I use to make jewelry!) Anyway, I went ahead and bought a hotshoe to PC adapter on ebay. Thanks!

If you want a good, powerful manual flash unit, look at the Vivitar 285HV. New, they're about $95 full manual control, and they accept a PC cord in the base.
