Hello All,

I will be shooting a volleyball tournament indoors in two weeks. I have been trying to decide on which lens I should buy but cannot figure out which is best. I am looking at the Sigma 50mm - 150mm f2.8 Canon Mt.
My problem is that I'm not sure if 50mm is going to be too close to the action. The maximum I really wanted to spend was $800-$900. Anyone have any advice on other lenses I should consider?

Thank you!

Bare minimum will be an f/2.8 lens... but you'll still need to shoot at some high ISOs to stop action and the Canon 350D gets a little noisy in the higher ISOs. So you might want to check out something faster. And 85mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.2L lens might do the trick (an f/1.2 lets in 4 times as much light as an f/2.8 lens).

Check out this thread for renting lenses. It's a great way to experiment before you buy something you might decide later is inadequate. (I've rented a lot of my lenses before actually purchasing them)

Depending on the light my volleyball shots are done with either the 70-200 2.8L lens or the 135F2.0L lens. I rarely get to shoot at less then 3200ISO and I usually manage 1/400th with the lens wide open. Occasionally it will fall to 1/320. I rarely get to go to 1600 and flash usually isnt allowed in volleyball once you are shooting at the HS varsity level, and certainly not above that. To make sure ask the officials ahead of time.

An 85 1.8 would be the best bet, most likely. I shoot it with a 70-200 2.8, but I'd like a quicker SS. The XT only goes up to 1600, so you'll be at 1/200th to 1/320th (if it's a good gym) at 2.8, which really isn't fast enough most of the time.

I plan on getting the 85 as soon as I can to have for indoor sports. I find that I'm near the wide end a lot for volleyball, since it's pretty crazy to follow the ball at the long end and tight VB shots just don't seem to work as well, unless they're really tight like with a 400mm from the stands..
