Is there anyway to preserve all the exif camera data with the image when reducing and saving for web?
I am using PScs3 and when I save the file for the appropriate size it drops all the data.

Thanks,

With CS3 (same as CS2), if you "Save for Web" and choose to optimize by file size, the EXIF is omitted to ensure the best quality for the specified size.

To preserve EXIF, perform a "Save as..." and choose JPG. From there, you'll be able to choose a quality setting and get close (and I use that term very loosely) to a specific file size while preserving EXIF.

I believe that no matter if you save the EXIF or not, uploaded images to DPC end up with no EXIF. I think this is a DPC "feature".

It can be done in ImageReady buy checking the "add Metadata" checkbox in the Optimize options. But without the optimise of file size you are just as well to use "save-as" in CS2/CS3. I know it can be done with the file size optimize intact but can't for the life of me remember how. I thought I saw it here somewhere but can't find it with the search function. It's damnable complicated unless you convert it to an action which I never got around to doing before I forgot how! :( I wouldn't need it for a challenge entry but I would like it for my personal photo website.

EDIT: Wasn't as hard as I remembered. Where have I heard that before.....
Anyway, go to imageready and make sure your options are to add metadata. Do this first and make sure you save that option. Then open the photo you want in CS2/3 and do what you will with it edit wise. Select save for web as usual and you will be able to use the optimize for file size option as usual. Then.... look at the bottom right of the save for web window and you'll find the edit in ImageReady button. Hit it and when IR is loaded with your image simply save optimized. It will add EXIF and the image will be the size you optimized for in Photoshop. Anyway it worked for me. Still need to make it an action that will ask me the file size. If I get around to doing that I'll post it.

For what ever reason I dont seem to have imageready installed. Every other app that is in the design premium is there, I'll have to check the install options.

So my understanding then is that you dont have to have the exif data on the submitted jpg image? I guess ultimately that was what I was worried about, But I still would like to have the data on the images I save back to my own website.

Thanks!
EDIT: Apparently IR doesnt come with the version of design premium. I can always use the save as feature. Thanks!!

The whole point of saving for web is to cut down all the unessicary baggage that will go along with the photo to maximize your quality:file size ratio.
if you want to keep your Metadata use Save as., its just as good but you get to keep the metadata

The only reason I use "Save for Web" is for the file size optimization. "Save as" won't allow me to closely approach limits I deal with.

The EXIF is uploaded with the image for challenge entries. I'm not sure about your gallery images though.

it would be fantastic if dpc used the exif info to populate the uploaded data on dpc.

There have been loads of time when i've been looking for images with a certain camera or lens and the information is just not there.

How hard would it be to add this feature?

Here, here! This would be a great DPC site enhancement!

but then we wouldnt be able to use save for web which allows us to maximize quality to the file size limits

Nothing's for free...there are always trade-offs.

I'd rather have an "Auto-EXIF-Fill-In" feature.

You can do both. Read the exif from the uploaded image to populate the fields and then strip it out from the final archive image. I know you can use ImageMagick to create an exif free copy of an image and it can be scripted/automated.

Guess you'd still have to raise the size cap though.
