Around 5:30am this morning we saw this around the moon, it was huge!

I hurried back into the house to get the camera and took the photo really fast before the clouds covered it up.

Does anyone know what it is? I have never seen one before.

or this?

It is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere
Some call it a Moon Halo

Back when I lived in Connecticut, when we saw a large ring around the moon, we knew it was likely the warning of a large winter storm.

I think it happens when there are ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. I've noticed these whenever there is high atmospheric chemistry going on up there. btw, the moon was like this night before last, where I live. Don't know if this helps or not, but yes, they are called moon halos.
