My remote shutter release for my Rebel XT doesn't seem to work with my 40D.
Anybody know what model # will work. There's no mention of a wireless one which I can find in the manual.
I always used the wireless remote for long exposures with my Rebel (among other things). I don't want to be limited to 30 seconds on the 40D.

| it will say in the back of the manual. if it's LC-5 like for the 5d it costs about $600 |

One of the more amazing lackings in the non-Rebel Canon dSLRs. The remote shutter solution is very expensive.
The LC-5 Wireless Controller for EOS runs about $650.00 |

| Consider getting the regular wired shutter release with a long cable? I know cables are so 1990's, but still it works and it's a fraction of the price of the wireless remote. |

Well, I'll probably get the one  gloda linked to (thanks!), or something in that price range.
What I'm looking for is what I have in the IR release for my Rebel. I want to be able to put the 40D in bulb mode, press the remote to open the shutter, wait for as long as I want, press the remote again to shut the shutter. I don't know if a wired onewill do that for me? I do dislike cables, though.

It looks like the exact same I just bought at BH under a different brand name:

But mine must be 3x better since I paid 3x as much *grumble grumble*

I suppose there is a point where you get less for what you pay for as well... a $650 remote just sounds ridiculous! I just ordered one for my D200 (that should work on my future D300) on eBay. I don't need anything amazing... and $650???? wow... whats so special about it? I don't have any suggestions for EOS, since i sold my only EOS camera more than a year ago! :)

As I recall it is more than a wireless shutter trigger, you can control exposure settings as well. |

With the 40D, you also have the option of 2 seconds. This probably doesn't solve your problem but may be helpful. |

TC-80N3 is a self timer, interval timer, bulb exposure timer and also has a shutter release count setting. I don't mind the cord.

it pissed me off with the 300d -> 10d and they were even in the same 'model year'
the freaking 300d remote even let me auto focus, and i paid like $20 for it !
it's a stupid after market gimmic.
i'll by one of those cheap ones linked more than likely.
i don't like cords either.

I really didn't want to blow $100.00 on a remote for my 400D so I went to radio shack and bought a small black enclosure and a jack to fit my 400D (3contact). Then I bought a couple of cheap garage door remotes from an expensive dollar store near me and wired them in the box from radio shack.Took a chicklets container and put two momentary switches in it and taped it up to look good with a quick disconnect plug.By putting a quick disconnect plug on the box from radio shack and one on the plug from radio shack and installing a few 9 volt batteries in series I now have a remote that works from as far as 100' from my camera through walls or anything else. A lot of the bought ones for the canon cameras are line of sight only. If I want just a shutter release I unplug the remote box(receiver) from the camera and plug in the (chicklets) box with the two buttons(shutter release and focus)The only real drawback is carrying around a 2" X 6" X 8" box if I know I'll need the remote

I bought the Phottix Wireless Remote for the 40D from eBay and it works very well. It doesn't require "line of sight" to work and the range is 320 feet/100 meters. It works in single shot or continuous shooting mode, as well as Bulb mode. The shutter release button works like the real one--press it halfway to lock the exposure and focus; press it all the way to trip the shutter.
It took about 2 weeks to get to me, though.

LOL I know the feeling buddy, Im finding out that pretty much everything is way more that for the rebel. gona research the crap out of the accessories next time b4 jumping in with both feet on the next upgrade :) then again I wouldnt trade the 40D for almost anything ATM I love it.
BTW I cant believe I paid $70cdn for a 3' wired remote better than nothing I guess :( but it did help in a way I guess to shoot my rainbow entry...

I bought the above also for my 30d. I am going to have to file down the plug a bit as the connection isn't strong enough. I was actually advised to do this from the people as they had had a few complaints about the same thing. Need to REALLY push it into the socket to make it work. If you get one that has that problem then get the nail file out and file a bit off the end of the plug. Have yet to do mine (only just got it) but am assuming that this will fix the problem.

OK, have done the filing thing and it connects great now. This remote is quite cheap $34AUD including postage from Hong Kong.
Auto Focus, immediate shot, 10 second timer, and bulb all available.
Edited to add:
I can't believe the 350d had an infrared remote and yet the higher end cameras don't. Sucks.

Infra red is not great as you need line of sight...
I actually had one of the Phottix Wireless ones arrive yesterday (10 days from point of purchse), for my 30D.
It seems well made and does the job. All in I paid £15 - Bargain. |
