Or maybe it shows that most have to shoehorn shots and this challenge was a little harder to do so without looking so obvious? Most people don't shoot for the challenge but rather find something that fits it. Whenever we get a challenge that requires something very specific with little wiggle room (see pencil) we get fewer entries.

Well, for someone who doesn't feel the editing is done unless ALL the adjustment layers have been used, I'm quite pleased.

Another minimal Top 10 would be pretty sweet, although I got a long way to drop... ;)

You mean you couldn't find anything that eats other thing which is worthy for front page?

I would assume you would put Bigfoot costume on and run in the woods take your own picture...

6.5? What’s the matter with you man, you were my mentor :P

Sorry guys, didn't want to hijack your post, but I saw this in CNN with headline "What to save from a fire"... something like that would probably get a ribbon... very nice picture, wanted to share :)

You're right, I'm sure, and that's a great picture. It does presuppose a familiarity with the story though. Entries here may try to shoehorn in a little with a lengthy title to explain what story the picture depicts, but otherwise they have to live without the usual newspaper privilege of continuing yesterday's and tomorrow's stories to yesterday's and tomorrow's customers. Or maybe they do, and the winners will be those who best appeal to what US voters have seen recently on US TV.

As for my part, both the picture and the title that gives its allusion are obscure, so there's no complaint here for my progress from just under 5 to just over 5.

I hadn't had a chance to check scores until I arrived at work this morning. I just about fell out of my chair and had to look twice! This is thee absolute best I have ever done. Oh how I hope it stays somewhere in this range.

Constructive comments so far, I love comments that point out faults that I may not have noticed.

Its not just front page of a newspaper... the description includes magazines.. and magazines need not be just newsweek or times or something generic.

i don't mind splitting hairs over this. when it comes to photojournalism (ie, story-telling photos), there's a huge difference between newsmagazines and, say, travel or country living magazines. as far as i'm concerned, if the photo doesn't tell me a story, it does not meet the challenge.

;-)

I won't argue especially hard with you, Skip. But I did take my shot specifically with a lifestyle-type article in mind, not "X does something terrible to Y."

Anyway, I'll take my DNMC lumps 'cuz I gots me a fave! :)

Well, then, I wish the challenge description was "take a photo that tells a story and could be featured on the cover of a magazine or newspaper".

Sorry to disappoint you with a travel or country living magazine cover.

I did not enter but I am voting. I won't argue with Skip because he is right.

From Wiki:

"Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that creates images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, and in some cases to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (such as documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by the qualities of:

Time lines — the images have meaning in the context of a published chronological record of events.
Objectivity — the situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict.
Narrative — the images combine with other news elements, to inform and give insight to the viewer or reader.
Photojournalists must make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to the same risks (war, rioting, etc.) that are faced by text-only journalists. The fact that they rarely have the option to stand back or wait until the dangerous parts of an event are over means they may take even more risks.

Photojournalism as a descriptive term often implies the use of a certain bluntness of style or approach to image-making."

I don't believe "advertorial" type shots are Photojournalism. But I vote high anyway...

:-D
