OK, this was my entry in Macro

What I'd like to know is what is it about the photo that made you hit 5? This is a genuine question to help me improve, not a "mad about scores" question, so no flaming please (I'm happy whenever I go over a 5)! Is it the subject matter, the lack of pp or something else? Basic challenge, all I did was crop, sharpen and resize. This is the first time I made it through a challenge with zero comments (and I got the .gif to go with it, lol). Thanks for your input!

Okay, I didn't vote, but had I have voted this probably would have been a 5 from me, too.

What I like: An original subject for macro, composition.

What I don't like: Lack of 'wow,' noise/noise ninja(?), background, lack of sharpness.

In a nutshell.

Thanks guys!

Jeffrey, those are actually dings in his beak. This bird runs his beak along the bars like the outlaws used to do with their metal cups in the old western movies to make noise. It's quite funny to see. I didn't use any noise reduction. I guess you're right about being limited by my camera though. This was actually shot through the bars since he's not very friendly and was heavily cropped. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford a dslr, lol.

Thanks again for the comments!

That could be causing the softness right there.

well, i didnt vote on this challenge since I've been hella busy, but I took a look and i thought "meh".

The bird is in a very uninteresting pose, if it had it's beak open, flapping it's wings or doing something else then it would be a bit more exiting. Also, the noise is a massive problem and the colours are a bit flat too. Maybe pushing the saturation and maybe bringing in the left hand side of the levels slider would help too? Also, i thought it was a bit too long in terms of crop.

You said you went for nothing more than crop, sharpen, resize. Maybe crop, resize and sharpen would have worked better and a little play with levels and shadow/highlight too to bring back some of the detail in the feathers where it's exposed most.

this is not to denounce you or tell you what to do but my initial gut reaction is the above, so sorry if it seems personal. I'm just rather blunt.

You can call me frank.

Ba dum tschs!

Thanks Frank! This is something I tend to forget. And, there was nothing said to take personal ;)

I've noticed that better scores follow better lighting with no exception. I think that's the most important thing to work on (even outside of dpc really).
