Not sure if everyone knows...but so. cal is burning up again. Last time this happened the fire was only 1/4 mile away from my house before it went out. Hopefully the winds calm down so the firefighters can get this thing controlled soon. My prayers go out to those who may have already lost their homes.

Dang, that's my home town. And the fire's pretty close to where ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Brad lives, relatively. Brad, you OK?

It's not really "San Diego" that's burning, though: it's East and a bit North of San Diego; Escondido is where the Shelters are being set up, and that's about half an hour North of the City of San Diego. Ramona, where the fire is out of control, is the foothills of the mountains East and North of SD, real pretty country.

spoke to Brad earlier, he was at the fires taking photos when he was asked to be interviewed for the TV. He said that they are not far from him but his home is safe for now

Escondido is my hometown, but I'm currently at school in LA.

From what I've read, the SD fires are nothing compared to the one in Malibu.

I spoke to a friend from Pepperdine Univ. in Malibu today, and they evacuated all of the dorms this morning.

He sent me this pic:
' . substr('//photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v128/114/90/1034700069/n1034700069_8087_3047.jpg', strrpos('//photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v128/114/90/1034700069/n1034700069_8087_3047.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Normally, you can see the ocean in the middle of that pictures.

Rumor has it they might cancel classes up here tomorrow, as there's a few small ones nearby.
I'm in near Pasadena off of the 210.

Only one??

There is the Castaic fire about 8 miles from me.

There is the Hwy. 14 fire that is about 4 mile from me.

There is the Agua Dulce fire that is now the Saugus fire. I live in Saugus.

Smoke every where.

Wind kicking up.

Scared.

Hope you're safe. I was just up there near Soledad and Sierra Hwy on Saturday and it was a gorgeous clear day. Ironic how things can change literally overnight. Sending you good safe wishes.

I know exactly where you're talking about. I grew up in Newhall and I also lived in Canyon Country and Saugus. Of course Saugus was mostly onion fields back then. It gets pretty crunchy and flammable out there. Hope you stay safe.

I'm no where near the fires, but you can smell it. The the dust and ash have coated EVERYTHING!! I have already swept my kitchen and dining rooms twice and have picked huge piles of dirt. And I have hosed off the coating off both cars. I'm going to have to go through the house and wipe everything down. It's gonna suck because I have to close up the house and we have no A/C!

*cough*
Nice weather we're having here
*cough*

At 4am this morning, made a trek to get up to my shop to grab both PC's (business records on one & a bunch of gooofy pics on the other) and it took about 3 hrs to make a 25 min drive, was kinda' like driving from Miami to Boston by way of Utah.
Managed to make it back home though and have all the personal stuff & critters ready to go if needed.

Oh and took a "few" pictures too - imagine that.

Thanks for the concerns!

Sounds like we'll be seeing lots of fire photos in the Photojournalism III Challenge. Do the rest of us have any hope of winning if we live in a quieter part of the country?

sounds bad, I saw a quote from the fire dept spokesperson saying a lot of people are going to lose everything today. I'm hoping the weather breaks and they can get a handle on it.

Yeah, let's focus on what really matters! :P

Brad, Thomas, and others, please be safe and let us know if there's anything we can do. I've seen DPC rally around its own many times.

Sorry, did not mean to come across as insensitive. I agree, hope everyone is OK, and let us know if we can help!

Actually Robt we have another fire going on down south east of the 8 as well. Near Campo/Tecate the "Harris Fire" has gobbled up some real estate.

The one to the North of Me (Mira Mesa/Sorrento Mesa) they fear are going all the way to the Ocean, there are mandatory evacs from areas near Brad/JopperTom all the way to Solana/Luecadia and in between.

Pretty Crazy around here...

Taken about 12:25pm up on the hillside behind my house.
It's building up & I'm just waiting to get the reverse 9-1-1 call to evacuate.

250,000 people evacuated in San Diego County so far. Dry winds the biggest problem- steady at around 20mph with gusts to 65mph means no air support (water tankers) to try to fight the fires and also push them along at high speeds. Hunidity only four to eight percent. Last night there were two fires in the county- today I heard eight but three merged together. Yes, they are mostly inland and away from the heart of San Diego but at a press conference earlier today said the one near Escondido could reach the coast before it is done. Even in areas not directly effected by the fires peolple are being asked to stay indoors and limit physical activity due to the bad air quality caused by the smoke. I was out yesterday and my eyes are still scratchy and sinus irritated.

Not a dramatic fire pic, but the sun is turned a bright red from the smoke in the air. The lights are a display in front of one of the museums in Balboa Park and not crossing lights.

Ya Brad, stay safe...they say go, do it... this is nutz...again

I have seen of the Malibu fire on the news but didn't realize there was stuff going on in the Irvine Area as well. Got a call from a fellow IT guy in our Foothill Ranch office stating that they had an Evac notice this morning as well.

Sheesh, you burn villages all your life, but it really hurts when it happens to your friends. :(

Andy, Brad, Thomas & the rest of SoCal - y'all stay safe - you're in my prayers. Keep smiling through the smoke and ash. Let me know if there is anything I can do...
