this was my first challenge...I thought the idea was to doubley make art...take junk and make something from it and then photograph it...by the time I'd finished the first part...the weather had turned and there was no time left...hope things get better...I totally agree about the disappointment...I have been visiting here for several months and joined at the wrong time I guess...:)

I've seen the same pattern -- high hopes, drops like a dead weight (the stage I'm in now) slowly rises to not-quite-as-good-as-it-was-at-the-begining-but-better-than-it-could-have-been

Good news is that I like my Matching entry and am so-so on my garage art so the scores matter less than my personal opinion

This was my first entry also, I have owned a digital camera for a total of 3 weeks and had gotten a trial version of PS two days before my entry. When the voting is done, I'd like to get some opinions on my final version of my final version. Live and learn.

i think that 1 or 2 should only be given to photos that a person is really disgusted about.. i mean no photo deserves that low of a score unless it is totally out fo focus.. has no composition, lighting qualitites at all...or if it doesnt fit the challenge subject at all.. i rarely give 3s and gave may be 1 or 2 2s but never have i given anybody 1.. i think some people rather use "1" recklesly...

Seems like many new people here are disappointed in their scores. One thing that you can do to help your future entries is to read the details of the challenge topic and follow them closely. For example:
1) the Zodiac challenge said "Take your best photo representing one of these signs." Some entires were not about a sign but rather about the zodiac in general and suffered in the voting because of it.
2) the Painting with Light challenge called for a "non-stationary light source" however there were several very good pictures that could have been either a stationary light source or a non-stationary one that wasn't moved much at all. Most of the ones that scored high were very obviously a light source that was moved.

A lot of the voters don't read the details closely either, and/or don't vote you down for not complying strictly. But some do, and you'll lose points on their vote and not know why if they don't comment (and most don't).

Do yourself a favor by reading the details and figuring out how to comply closely.

Whereas I fully understand the sentiment here, this does take away the possibility of creative interpretation.

But you're right if getting a high score is the main consideration.

That's why voting is still truly subjective. I found three WOW photos right away and gave them 10s. But after sorting out the exceptional images, how people from many different places interpreted the Challenge was part of the challenge of voting fairly. I'm still struggling with the process.

I love that there's a WOW and a 'disappointing' thread running at the same time

[i]"i think if people WERE voting 1's and 2's to bring people down they would be spotted rather quickly, as their 'avg vote given' would reflect this rather clearly..."[i]

My avg score given is low right now due to a lot of aloof photos in GA challenge...so it's not really fair to say this...
