Does anyone score the "car in the garage" type photos high? I am really dissapointed that more people didn't get items out of their garages, arrange and photograph them in interesting ways.

I did. And I'm getting royally hammered for it.

I wish I'd found a stray cat instead...

I'm glad I didn't enter. Most of the ideas that I had were done much better by others ;)

Same here, but I really like my picture so it isn't too big of a deal. :)

dose basic editing include turning part of the image to b/w?

Unless it was done by using and adjustment layer and a gradient map to carefully select some pixel range and turn them b&w (and that would be very limited IMHO), I don't think it's allowed since you are not supposed to use the selection tool except for cropping...

It can be done. See thread.

I did exactly that and when I first viewed my score, I was delighted but it`s dropped like a stone since then....funnily enough my submission for "Things that go together" experienced the same good start then drop.
All my previous entries (7)never varied much from the score achieved after 30 or so votes....am I seing a new trend of low voting or was the voting pattern unusual on my first 7 submissions ?

My rule of thumb is that whatever my score is after 50-60 votes, I minus 1 whole point and that will be the final score.

Seem pretty much spot on all the time.

jonpink - I notice the late drop in scores as well - it makes me wonder whether there might be some creative voting going on. But, that aside, this is a great excercise, and stregthens your skills no matter what, so, scoring be damned, this will make me a better shooter.

Being new to the site, I've noticed that straightforward good shots(even ones with decent composition) don't fare well at all and are judged particularly harshly but, without comments. As an example, I'm getting killed in this contest, but I can't figure out why.

I'll close this post with a request for more comments, particularly on things you give 4-6 points to, as those are the photos that could have been better and will benefit most from feedback (note: I am guilty of this myself, and will try to do better.)

Best,

Never experienced a difference as big as that in any of my previous submissions Jon..so maybe the two that are on the go at the moment are behaving normally ??

I found this Challenge to only have about 10 really good shots....and None to make you go WOW like Gordon's Last one....

Think I agree with this. Myy first quick run through usually reaps at least a couple of 8's, and then a heap of 7's for later consideration, but it's a very poor harvest this time.

Really? Mine always start high and drop like a lead weight.

The pattern of voting is different as well with these two submissions.

Since the first 30 or so votes (which were obviously higher)everything seems to be between 4-6..previously, I just couldn`t predict what I was likely to get.
I`m not complaining...life would be boring if everything went the way we expect.
Missing my usual comments from your good self Jon..so maybe I haven`t made these submissions interesting enough.

Honestly...(and i may get some harsh responses)...BUT I have scored a lot of the "garage art" photos 1-3. Due to the fact that most are pics of motorcycles, cars, actual garages. I always read the challenge directions pretty literally and it seemed like we were supposed to photograph garage items...vehicles just didn't pop into my mind.

Yeah, at first I thought the same thing. I looked thru 'em w/o voting. But a car and the like ARE items found in a garage. Albeit large items, but items nonetheless. After voting, I just didnt give 'em anything above or below a 5 (for most of them). I think they do fit the challenge but is not as creative or to the spirit of the challenge. It's too literal of a fit, IMO.

Besides, I dont wanna jump on the score low bc it does not fit the challenge band wagon. In the fotog's mind, there has to be a fit in some way. Just bc I don;t get it, doesn't mean it doesnt fit. I mean, it's not like the sheep shot, which I think is efing HILARIOUS but clearly not a fit.
My 2 cents!

And lastly, you shouldn;t get harsh response for voting the way you see fit. It is up to you afterall.

I just can`t figure this challenge out...The voting pattern is the strangest I`ve seen in my short time here. My submission (which was not a car or garage etc)started off getting high scores..then they got a little lower and now I seem to be picking up 2`s and 3`s.
Can`t wait to see how it all ends up.

yeah i'll say..
i reloaded a few times right at the start and my average was 10 :)
a few seconds later it started going down... and then it leveled off and was middle range decent.. and now like you.. i think i am getting 2's and 3's
02/05/2004 06:33:17 PM · #21
the pattern seems to be this, IMO- starts off decent, descends (sometime rapidly) but towards the end picks up a wee bit of steam.

Dunno what it is really. Even the best shots get 1'2, 2'2, & 3's. Voters are fickle & some supposedly vote low to bring their own shots up, altho I donlt see how this can be done.

I wonder if folks see a good picture that could win & vote it down on purpose. I guess everyone wants to be a winner!

I for one am not shy about saying I like a shot better than my own. Hell, I am not a great fotograher by any means & if I see a shot that is fantastic I will have problems commenting that it is my fave by far including my own.

well i think if people WERE voting 1's and 2's to bring people down they would be spotted rather quickly, as their 'avg vote given' would reflect this rather clearly...

I guess nut who is checking all that? Seems like a whole lot of work for nonsense stuff. The way I see it is this- if some voters are doing this then everyone's shots come down & you really don't loose much. Plus the voter that may do this to bring their shot up cannot control how others will perceive & score their own shot so I say do your worst!
02/05/2004 06:40:02 PM · #24
On the other hand... one thing dpchallenge COULD do is just average everybody's vote... so that my 'average vote cast' was a 5... and so was everyone else's... the votes would be curved.. so if i voted 1's 2's and 3's... in the end they would be 3's 4's and 5's and if i voted ALL 8's 9's and 10's then it would be curved to be 4's 5's and 6's in the end...

not that i think there is anything really wrong with the way things work now... it doesn't REALLY matter.... it is just a challenge.
