I suggest that we have an occasional challenge where your entry must be as it comes out of the camera with the only editing allowed being rotation, crop and resize. Could be either themed or free study. Try that a few times and see what we get.

good idea.

I'm all for that! Most of my entries would fit that challenge - 'course my scores show it, but that's okay with me.

Yes please! The Past was good fun.

Do any serious film photographic clubs have a 1-hour photo challenge?

If not, why not ?

How about no cropping, rotation, just resize to submit.

I was 49 seconds too slow :P Freezing weather doesn't make it easy to type fast.

The thing about just resizing is that it softens the image. At least allow USM.

This especially bad when you use no sharpening in the camera, because the normal sharpening is way too much. Soft, resize = extra soft (but great for USM).

You can use USM for contrast adjustment though. :-P

Try Amount 40%, radius 250px, threshold 5.

If we're all in the same boat, would the softening be an issue? I'm with faidoi, it would be fun to have a Challenge with no change except resizing. I love to play with all the toys and am an advocate for their use, but it's also fun to see how close to acceptable imaging one can come with something straight out of the camera.

I like the Idea very much, but rotating is a MUST !

The only downside is that everybody has to send a proof of their shot... = a lot of work for the admins.

Please post a challenge "theme" where you think "straight from the camera" rules would be appropriate and lead to a creative batch of submissions...

I suggested this type of challenge way back when we first started debating about editting. It didn't go over very well at the time as I recall. My how times change. I'm all for it. :)

Well, I'd go with "freestyle" - Everyone knows his/her specialty and could present best work in that style.

But this is DPChallenge. Where's the challenge in just shooting anything? =] Also, remember that we've already had a "minimalistic editing" challenge in the past (called The Past).

EddyG - I didn't know this had been done as recently as August 2003. It hardly seems necessary to repeat the exercise again so quickly, although, at first glance, 115 people did a rather good job at it. But, indeed, it's been done.

How about a "minimalistic editing" challenge based on a number or a letter of the alphabet? There used to be some like before I got here and I thought they would be fun.

But not all of us were here for that challenge and the challenge would be getting a great shot directly from the camera.

If you really want a theme, go with animals since they seem so popular or clocks another popular subject or drinks!

Because they have forgotten how fun it is to just play sometimes.
:-P

I enjoyed it when we had a challenge like this in the past. It was fun pushing myself to get the best possible image without editing. (And the fact that I placed was kinda cool, too. :-))

I had a personal attempt at this for the Science challenge. I wound the camera settings down to 640x480 and was going to attempt zero editing. Part of the motivation was lack of access to image editing software on the day I was taking and submitting the shot. In the end a friend convinced me to do some USM and desaturation but in hindsight these changes didn't alter the shot too much.

It forced me to think very carefully about composition, exposure and other camera settings (such as sharpness). I didn't do very well but I liked the personal challenge it provided.

In terms of a challenge topic, I think something outdoors in an uncontrolled environment really extends the challenges provided by shooting "au natural". Perhaps "In my park" or "In my street" or "Going to work/school" might be possible challenge topics.

Edit: I'm all for NO editing (no cropping, resizing, sharpening, rotating). Of course I realise some camera's might not do 640 or less and I guess rotating does allow portrait orientation so I wouldn't mind some very limited exceptions if people really want them.

why do we need to rotate?... if we have to do everything else at the time of exposure why can't we get the allingment correct... i think that should be part of it.

Every entry would have to be in landscape format, except for those models which recognise camera rotation. My camera doesn't know if I'm holding it horizontally or vertically.

i support doing this kind of thing every couple of months, both to mix things up a bit, i.e. give us different challenges to overcome; and to balance the edited shots and let the real 'camera ninjas' shine.

Here's a few very quick (and probably duplicate) ideas.

News worth - Take a shot of a news worthy event, place or person, suitable for a newspaper or magazine.
Your town/village/city - Document how your town looks in February 2004 using photography. (This could also be cool for a tryptic challenge.)
Daily life - Shoot something that appears in your daily life.
