Ive heard that the 20D is still a better camera than the 30D.

Huh? On what basis? I own both and prefer the 30D over the 20D.

Question is . . with Canon considering bringing the cycle time down from 18 months to 12 (apparently) is it worth going from the 20 to the 40, or taking a cheaper step, going to the 30 then waiting for the 50 (or whatever) ?

Yeah, I heard that as well. On the DPC forums I think it was.

NO way is the 20 better than the 30. We love our 30's!

When I had the 20D came out, I passed on an upgrade to the 20D a) (and most importantly) because the 20D still had no spot meter and b) it was a smaller, lighter and less sturdy a built. I like 'em heavy and sturdy.

I waited for the 30D before I upgraded because it finally featured a spot meter, which I depend on heavily in most shooting situations. While the 30D is, of course, an improvement in many aspects over its predecessor(s), none of these would have been sufficient to persuade me to pay for.

I agree... I skipped the upgrade to the 20D and waited for the 30D.
