Hey Rooster, is this problem the same two files or maybe the same original file and any other file??? You're not opening a PSD file that has about 1000 layers are you? Try opening two 100k jpegs and see if that works. I've been reading that CS3 is more memory intensive. I'd be at the Adobe support site if I were you. Email the suckers. For the price they charge for their stuff, support is something you should never have to worry about.

CS3 actually seems to manage memory more efficiently than CS2.

I'm wondering if it'll run in safe mode... if CS3 will run in Windows safe mode, we can determine if it's CS3 or Windows that is broken.

I had it on XP and crashed few times on start up, most of the time when it was looking for plug-ins. Did a reinstall and would run fine. But I have a lot more memory than I had before. I think it does use a lot. I would opened task manager and then watch the useage. Now I got it on Vista and it works fine...so far.

Excellent question. Sadly, it is all files of varying sizes. If I try to open 2 files at once...crash. If I open one file successfully and then try to open another....crash.

I am seriously thinking about going back to CS2. While I like the interface better on CS3, at least CS2 worked!

Update:

Just got a new error message that reads:

Photoshop.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x075dcacc" referenced memory at "0x00000014". THe memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

So the I still have the message up and ps has crashed. I was trying to open a picture with a project already running. Gonna look into this error message and report back.

The saga continues...

Apparently the system is experiencing memory errors. It may have nothing to do with CS3, but could very well be a hardware problem. Running a check on your memory would be prudent.

Make sure you've installed the latest and most up-to-date drivers for your video card. Also, make sure that you have the screen setup to display '(Highest) 32-bit' colour. (right-click the desktop, properties...)

Tracking down program crashes like this are impossible, unless you can get your hands on the source code for Photoshop! :) - Photoshop will have its own .exe running, but it will also be accessing a whole bunch of different dll's and drivers, and the bug could be caused by any one of them.

If it was me, I see two choices; 1) Revert back to CS2, or 2) Re-install the OS. It depends on how adventurous I'm feeling.

FINAL UPDATE:

So, a day or two after my last post, my bastard pc crashed... kinda. A windows system file up and disappeared. The OS just would not load. A dos repair didnt do it. I basically had to format my drive and reinstall windows. Yeah for me. Whatever. The purge was good.

I have reinstalled cs3 and it seems to be behaving now. Ultimately, at least for me, the problem was with windows... I think.

Thanks for all the support & posts guys!

Glad to hear you are up and running again. Windows has weird ways of dying at times. Hope ya didn't lose anything.

I coughed up some dough for a data recovery and got all my important files back.

Thanks so much for all your help. You were definitely right!
