Here's a very interesting article/blog by documentary filmmaker Errol Morris discussing one (two, actually) of the most famous wartime photos of all time, "Valley of the Shadow of Death" by Roger Fenton, taken during the Crimean War. Fenton took two slightly different photos from the same vantage point, and there's been a long-running debate about whether or not he "staged" one of them, and if so, which one.

Errol Morris is at it again, this time with a long discussion about war photography in Lebanon with AP photographer Ben Curtis: It was all started by a mouse (Part 1 of 2). Be sure to also check out the follow-up story, Thought experiment #2, as well.

Freakin' riveting! It just goes to show that above all else, an image is designed to convey the photog's interpretation of the event, or whatever, and without him/her, one can never know what that interpretation was.

Thanks, Paul, immensely intriguing.

Fascinating, indeed. I'm rather glad that this (old) thread was resurrected.

FYI, the links to Part-3 of the series as posted in Part-1 and Part-2 ( and in a posting above ) have been invalidated due to the passage of time. For those, if any, who are interested in the concluding Part-3, here is a link that works ( at least it works as of 1/21/2010 )

Part-3 of "Which Came First?"
