Like the DOF on the latter, with the oars leaning against the wall.

thanks for all your feedback. i'm very happy with the shot i submitted, but i'm interested in how many totally opposite comments i will get (two out of three already totally contradict each other). the reason i didn't submit the other ones:

i actually had the daisy submitted all week and then changed it sunday afternoon. my husband never liked that one and in the end i liked my final submission better. maybe i should've submitted and got those cute baby/flower voters on my side! :P

the rope was an attempt to recreate a shot i took the week before (don't you hate it when that happens) and just didn't come out the way i wanted it to.

finally, the bumble bee (my husband's favorite) just is so much nicer in color and square format (color bumblebee) and has not enough contrast in b&w i think.

I wish my tossouts were that good :)

hmmm .. well, i like the color bee, but i thought the bw bee had tons of contrast and an astounding amt of detail. oh well, im sure what you submitted was equally splendiferous!

I agree that B/W image containing no pure black or white can work to express a certain mood, or give a period feel to an image. High and low key techniques (where one or the other is dominant) work, too, obviously. In general, though, I don't think that's what people really mean when they complain about "just shades of gray". In most B/W, contrast plays an important part. In flat lighting, or with the wrong combination of colors, it can be really hard to get good results.

The "wall" is the bottom of the rowboat, actually, which is another reason I wasn't happy with that one...people who weren't familiar with my family's watercraft wouldn't recognize it.

How'd you do the white text with the black text shadow one?

Kimbly, I like them both, but I actually like the Lobster pot shot better!

I went to photoshop..picked a font shape ans size (can''t remember which)

Made one straight white print. Then I went into photoshop and made the "black" type, angled, stretched, lighted and sized it all with the intention of using the "white" letters as cut-outs.

I was thinking those big "HOLLYWOOD" letters in L.A. but I have always been fascinated in seeing those hollywood special effect where a person casts a shadow that is different. But you sado-masochistic freaks make us do everything in camera...grrrrrr.... >:-/

Then it was a matter of printing the "black" shadow art, cutting out the white letters, setting the letters up on the "black" print and lighting it in such a way as to get even, shadowless lighting (didn''t want shadows off the white 3-D letters because I already had my spotlights, shadows etc ''PRINTED" on the black letter paper.

Put a slight curl to the "black " printed art at the back to get a soft backlight effect and ...VOILA!!

Forget to mention..I had to light the white letters in photoshop because I knew I would not be using and "REAL" spotlights and I needed to mimic my printed art lighting. I could not use perfect white letters..they had to be "pre-lit".

This was a very time consuming piece but ultimately I didn''t use it. Why? who knows..not like there were 30 other white/black montage set-ups entered :-)

I liked the rope shot from the week before - good cropping and better contrast and the bumble bee shots are terrific.

You are crazy to think these are rejects! I liked the piano and the person walking along the path. Have to say that the donut shot sort-a freaked me out... in a humorous, chilling sort of way!
;-)

I have my "rejects" along with some others....let's see if I can get this link to work: My Px

P.S.
"Rejects" used lightly... "Rejects for this site", but I like them. :-)

Thanks :-)

I had that "Snoopy is Groov'n" as my entry up until Sunday. But I don't like having pictures of me being judged. It just weirds me out. It's all I could do to have my eyes in the last contest. So I was happy to send this one to the "rejects" pile when a new shot presented itself. :-)

I really prefer to post the outtakes after the voting is done, especially since some of my outtakes tend to be very similar, but I do have this one that was a real loser.

Dead Fish

I also have another b&w photo that I really liked and I was considering going back to the same location and shooting it again.

It is here: Wicked Forest

Next week I will post some outtakes that are different angles of my same subject.

I''m glad you posted that... Now I''ll try to put up a link to my outtakes...

Outtakes I hope

I really liked the first one but I didnt think there was enough contrast between the subject and background so I didn''t use. I''d appreciate any comments. I''m new at this!
