Is the extra money worth the 2.8?

Depends really. I recently got the 2.8 without IS. It is an awesome lens. I had a Canon 70-300 IS lens and found that I had very little use for the IS and the lens didnt last long because they are plastic. You can't use the IS when mounted on a tripod or when panning, so felt there was no point as I shoot mainly horses.

I picked my 2.8 up at KEH.com for $999 second hand.

I'm given to believe that the IS on the 70-200 lenses does not need to be switched off when the camera is mounted on a tripod, although it hardly adds anything to the picture quality in that instance, it has to be said and I further believe that the IS system will aid with panning in mode 2 setting.

KEH f2.8 and f4

I have used these guys many many times and have never had a problem with them. Bought my 20D, my Metz ct60-4, other lenses and batteries etc,. You will see their prices are great.
