Some of you might remember that I recently pulled all of my images from the microstock sites.

Got the e-mail this morning about an image I previously had on Shutterstock. It's a simple image shot with my old Rebel... a voodoo doll on a white background.

1/4 page in a book. 10,000 copies. Sold for $75.

That feels a LOT better than 0.25! And, I'm not even "selling" macro stock yet :-D

Do you mind if I ask where/how since you are not selling macro yet?

I was about to upload a bunch to Alamy, but choosing a stock agency is turning out to be a huge internal debate/challenge for me.

$75 is 250 downloads at Shutterstock at 0.30 per download. Well done for kicking the MS habit.

This is the image.

They originally found me through Shutterstock I suppose, as they originally asked if an image (with SS markup) was mine. Likely since I pulled all my photos from the MS sites, I left them with little options, if they wanted the image.

getting a by line too... :-D

I hope you did the right thing although I doubt it. It see little future for midstock.

In this case you were lucky that there was no voodoo doll they like available on micros. But soon micros will cover most if not all of the 'general' subjects. So I don't think these kind of images will sell well in the future as midstock.

Of course, if you're able to shoot high-end stuff, macro is still the place to be.

a final note. I read on the Alamy forum that they find $0.5 / image / month a good average. That's way less than many microstockers made :o)
