I looked at your list of the lenses you own, with this lens and the other lenses you have, you should have a great time in Yellowstone. The 100-400 lens is great, my friend owns it and he gets awesome photos from it.

Tom, have you ever been to yellowstone before?

Are you coming into Jackson hole and going north then?

If you come in through Bozeman, make sure you make time to stop at the Garage restaurant, and preferrably the Corral (not to be confused with the Golden Corral at all) coming back north if you go through West Yellowstone up highway 90 when you get close to Big Sky.

Roger said it's starting to snow in the high country already, but there will probably be a warm snap before then. The peaks will already start to be building up. The colder it is up there the more likely you'll see a Grizzly down lower. The big ones like to stay cool, but not frozen.

Hope you have some good finds, but stay safe and bring the bear spray ;)

Should be a fun trip :)

I'm considering getting the 100-400 for a little extra reach on the 5d.
How are you getting along with the push pull zooming?
Is it usably sharp at 400mm?
How's the bokeh?

Tom,

I spent 2 weeks out there in early Aug. and a week in Feb too. It is a fantastic place. I have posted some images here

my photos

Haven't even edited my Yellowstone summer images yet.
Driving through Beartooth Pass was great too - lots of "big sky" vistas.

My "best camera" a Nikon 8800 broke the day I arrived AAAHHHHHHHHHHH. Had to make do with a Canon G5. With the gear you have you will be in heaven.

Actually, I find that my FIL's 80-400 is still too short many times. :(

Might have recommended the 2x TC if you had gotten the f/4L.

You'll see guys in Yellowstone off to the side of the road with a 2x and a 600mm sometimes, especially if the wolves are close to the roads. By close, I mean less than a mile away or so ;)

I hope you have the blessing of being at the front of a Bear-Jam, instead of in the back.

Tom
I am going to the Tetons next weekend for a week. we hope to make it to Yellowstone one day. I am staying at Togwotee lodge just east of Morain to the east of The Tetons. It is my frist trip and i am sure looking forward to it. I will be with our camera club so if you see a couple cars (one will be a gold Malibu) with 8 or 10 photogs and tripods stop and say hi. Have a great trip

Thanks Tom. Yep, make it to the top of Angles Landing. A bit scary but well worth the effort.

I recieved my lens today 100-400 IS and when I use it in IS mode it makes like a motor noise when I focus, I was not expecting that, Is that normal or do I go to the roof and jump off
