After observing two expert editing free studies now I think that all free studies should take place with the expert editing rule set. Not only would a photographer have free choice of the subject but they would also have the choice of what kind of post-processing they would like to do. This would truly be a Free study. Don't feel however that "digital art" will have the advantage or will always win ribbons. Take for example this the August Free study. Neither 1st or 2nd place photos were edited using the expert editing allowances. For those who like entering "digital art" (man that term is overused!) they (we) will simply realize that there are those who do not like it as much and our entries will be voted accordingly.
I personally am a big fan of this ruleset and everything that can be done with it. Again I realize though that this is just one opinion among many, but discussion and opinions are what make this site so great!

I think the spirit of your suggestion could be implemented in a way that adds even more benefit for all - Run a version of the monthly free study under each editing set every month.

September Free Study - Expert
September Free Study - Advanced
September Free Study - Basic
September Free Study - Minimal (if this is still around)

Pro's -

People who don't want to have anything do with any editing set they have some problem with don't have to

The entries will be spread across 4 challenges, making free studies much easier and less tedious to try and vote 100% on

Con's -

Only con I can think of is people accidentally submitting to the wrong Free Study but this happens from time to time as it is so I don't think it's a great burden to place on the contestants.

Con: scalvert having four blue ribbons posted at once ;-)

I think they'd have to be "exclusive" challenges, so you can only enter under one rule set.

Actually, it would take up a lot of room on the front page, especially when the results are posted.

True (on both!), and yes exclusive.

No thanks. If digital collages/art/graphics (whatever you want to call it) must be continued, then run them on their own and give those who prefer photography to have an advanced free study every month. It really, really sucks having to mix both types of images/artwork together in one monthly event.

JMO of course.

FWIW, I think my Advanced editing Ducky image scored just as well in a Expert Editing challenge as it would have a Advanced Editing challenge.

I don't think it really matters. There will be voters that dig the "artography" and those that hate it and all others in between. So, it's pretty much gonna balance out.

I don't care which way that goes. I'm happy either way.

I agree on being exclusive
BUT the could be released 1 a week for 4 weeks, then there is only 1 on the front page at a time.
week 1 - expert
week 2 - minimal
week 3 - basic
week 4 - advanced
or whatever
Must be taken in preceding 4 weeks from submision date.
What do ya all think?

I actually really like Mr. Guy's idea. You wouldn't end up with one "best of the best of the month" but, since as I understand it freestudies are meant as a chance to show off great stuff that didn't fit in the other challenges, that shouldn't matter.
And is having a bigger front page really that much of a big deal?

That is an excellent solution.

I'm all for it.

I like the idea too. As this site is constantly evolving, maybe this could be something implemented for a month to see how it works.

If you see a challenge marked "Expert Editing", you aren't compelled to look in there and vote Glad Bad. Problem solved :) But we know otherwise, don't we :)

idea is wonderful but the implementation is problematic. Imagine I enter advanced editing (runs last week) free study this month and expert editing for next month, in this case how much time I get between two challenges (one week or so).
And if I reverse the entered challenges that is, expert this week and advanced next month I get around 1.5 (or more) months between.

So all these challenges have to be run on same week then. That is the first week of month. In this case the front page is the issue.

Uhhhhhh... personally I hope to never see another Expert Editing ruleset applied to a regular free study again...

You could have all four run all month long, and each of them be voted one at a time, one week at a time during the following month. Would have a gap between the end of the challenge and when voting starts for three of them and that might drive some people crazy though.

me too honestly. I have great respect for the work that goes into multi exposure shots and have used the full extent of the rules with good scores for what thats worth. But I wouldn't have entered them unless it was a monthly FS. Another reason I wouldn't want to see it used for FS is that the rules are still in their trial period. I don't really understand why one would put the site's most highly competitive challenge under a trial ruleset that is still "working out the bugs." I'll probably enter more expert editing challenges but I hope FS stay under advanced editing, until Expert Editing has closed some of the confusing loopholes/workarounds when it comes to brushes. Just my two cents.

I adamantly disagree!

I love Expert Editing for free studies, because my main interest is multiple exposure HDRI; I don't get to submit many here which is disappointing. I also love the larger image size and file size in Expert Editing. So bring on the Expert Editing!!!

Of course I'd be just as happy if Advanced Editing was updated to allow multiple exposure HDRI and the larger image and file size :-)

Sounds good to me. Everyone has different opinions about expert editing, this would appear to be a rather elegant solution.
