Lovely brisk fall day. I can't wait to take another Walkabout. My other pics are locked up on a dead card reader. But it was a very very nice challenge.... [thumb]587085[/thumb]

I happen to work at a university which happens to be next to an art museum which happened to have a chalkfest which I happened to run into when walking around. So I got wrapped up taking photos of that instead of mundane fences, bushes and the like. However, a piece of chalk is a very mundane thing, so in the end I figured these photos were consistent with the goal of the side challenge (although I am sure some may beg to differ and will be happy to rate these as DNMC).

For those of you who mentioned it I was originally going to enter this in sillouettes but couldn't get the file size small enough in GIMP.

First of all, a great big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in this challenge, by shooting, commenting, or just supporting the effort. It was great fun to shoot, and even more fun to read your walkabout stories and see the wonderful images you all came up with. I'm trying to leave comments on at least one photo from everyone who submitted, and will do so by the end of this week as I work my way through the posts. And there’s still time to post, if you haven’t had time to do so yet.

On another note, I'm planning to make this a regular monthly side challenge, running about the middle of each month. Whether you participated or just wish you had, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the challenge ... what worked, what didn’t, and how could it be improved? Did you like everyone shooting on Saturday, or should we give the option of shooting on Saturday or Sunday? Was the limit of 5 photos enough? Too much? Should we have separate sign up and posting threads? Got any ideas for new rules to add to the mix? To get the ball rolling, here’s an idea of mine:

Each month I'd like to add some “special” rules to keep the challenge fresh, while still staying true to the original concept of challenging ourselves to make photographs out of ordinary subjects in ordinary places. For the October challenge, I was thinking of allowing us to travel a short distance from our home/work to start the challenge (say, up to 3 miles/5 km or something like that), but requiring all our shots to be taken at 50 mm. Future challenges could limit us to wide angle or tele lengths, or point-and-shoots, etc. We could also change up the rules about where to start or end the shoot (like “travel 7 miles from your home and start shooting” or – for mid-winter – “spend Saturday taking pictures inside your house”). Like these ideas? Hate em? Got any of your own?

drydoc has already given me a great suggestion – head N, W, E and S a set distance from the same starting location, and submit one photo taken from each spot. Let's hear your ideas too!

I really thought this was a single image side challenge - take a picture one day and edit and post the next. I like the idea and am happy to hear that this will continue in the coming months. I will be sure to keep the camera handy and let it take me for a walk.

Multiple photos are fine (no more than 3 to 5 please!), and i like the little stories people wrote. But to be honest, I didn't have time to get through all the image with that many photogs (up to 50) entering 5 pictures. I did try to get comments on at least one entry for each photog. I would just hope that others would follow suit.

On one level I like your idea for October of controlling the lens used, but you need to remember that there are those who don't have a 50mm (i have a 60mm) and those that use P&S.

Firstly, thanks for the walkabout challenge initiative. I dare say it would be great just to do it once a month without any 'extras'. Limitations can be a bit of a drag, but having said that, it can also add to the fun if we're all singing something like the same tune :)

I'd gleefully jump at 50mm, but there could be a little equipment problem for quite a few people there, even if it were only 'prime-lens-anywhere-from-35-to-100'. As long as the 'rules of the month' were voluntary it wouldn't be a problem.

How about 2 of people, 2 of things and one 'front cover'?

North South East West sounds good - might be tricky for someone who lives on the coast :) Again, voluntary/flexible 'special' rules strikes me as the best idea.

5 pictures is about right, I think. Mine are in a walkabout collection in my portfolio, so you can nip in and browse the out takes - I have a couple of comments there (thanks!). Please excuse my shameless self-promotion.

I enjoyed this challenge, I would like to see it again. I don't like the idea of restricting it to a certain focal length or a certain type of lens or camera. You will not get as many participants if you set rules like that. I also don't like the idea of having to shoot something in particular (2 people, 2 animals, etc). I rarely photograph people and like I said, restrictions will limit the number of people who do this. I think a lot more people signed up for this in the beginning than who actually followed through with it, restrictions may just add to that. Oh, and if this is a walkabout challenge, what is the reason for driving 5 kms or so for next month?

But that's just my opinions, it's your challenge, obviously you can do what you like.
09/17/2007 02:57:14 PM · #161
Lens restrictions could prove to be too much of a restriction, inasmuch as it might leave some people feeling like they can't participate, even if you made it a voluntary restriction.

What might be useful is to have some generalized subject restrictions - like the challenge themes, where you can say go out from your house on a walk and come back with pictures of "blue" or "stormy" or whatever.

Some unifying theme would be a good idea, as it would add an extra dimension to viewing all the offerings - not just "what you saw on your walk", but what you interpreted as fitting the theme within what you saw on your walk.

Or have the best of all possible worlds all at once - have the day's portfolio include some "best of" shots and some that fit the theme.

Thanks again for doing this, and for keeping it going - this has been a fun exercise and I'd like to continue to participate, however you decide to set it up.

I agree with KarenNfld about keeping the format simple with few restrictions. However, I think the Walkabout Challenge can still happen if people drive 5 miles, then walkabout. It is surprising how things can change in such a short distance. Also, keeping the challenge within walking distance would soon become a restriction in itself.

I look forward to the next one, and still can't get over my surprise on just how many people found great subjects so close to home.

That captures what I was thinking, too. If we keep it close, hopefully it will still seem "ordinary" to us, in keeping with the spirit of the challenge.

Good feedback ... thanks. I like the idea of making the extra "rules" voluntary, so people can decide whether to follow them or not but still be able to enter the challenge regardless. Maybe call them "suggestions" instead of rules, i.e., "try to zoom with you feet instead of your lens" rather than "all entries must be taken at 50mm"

I enjoyed this and would like to do it agagin. I have started and hope to finish commenting on at least 1 of each persons photos I have certainly enjoyed all the comments I have recieved :)
I like the ideas of having special rules as it would force me to do things I would never normally do left to my own devices. I think it would be good to have the special rules as a voluntary componenet so that people who do not have the equipment or dont enjoy photographing particualr subjects can just to their own thing.

Dennis, this was an excellent idea, and I'm really glad I participated. There's so much to see so close to home. I understood at the beginning that we'd have all week to make comments, and I hope that still applies, because it'll take me that long to get around to everyone. I wouldn't change a thing for the next one. I'm looking forward to it.

Well, I have been so impressed with this idea. First, I didn't think it would work as a walkabout, I was wrong, it worked like a charm. Then, I am reknown for not commenting, so that's what I have been doing.

I have been here for over an hour giving comments, a first for me. I will work my way through all by the end of the week and leave at least one comment on all. Everyone has gone out and captured some fantastic shots. I hope people appreciate my comments, I think I can be caustic at times, but never hurtful. Although there are no duffers so far.

It is nice to give comments without the pressure of a challenge.

I am planning the next one now. Thanks Dennis, this was an inspired idea.

I've greatly enjoyed your comments, Steve - they add spice to the experience (not to mention a touch of humour).

eta - I've had a lot of comments and I've enjoyed all of them, not just Steve's - thanks!

while I did not join in this time, I like the concept. I would go with three images and I like the suggestions to give it some variety. Say one week "go 3-5 miles from home and take your picture", or "include a body of water in your picture." The idea is something that gives it some variety, without putting in much of a restriction.

Loved it, but thought the time frame was somewhat tight, given other obligations such as work and family as well as important stuff like the main DPC weekly challenges and other DPC side challenges (eg B&W this month) that also require one's attention. Would suggest changing to 2 days (Sat/Sun) or even better make this a weekend event (Fri 5 pm to Mon 8 am) -- and then give us 48 hours to process and upload.

Steve thanks for your comments :)

Just also wanted to add it would be a good idea to start a new thread for posting photos keeps things tidy ;)

This was great fun for me I do tend to walk alot and for me to wonder off for a day and shoot is no biggie, that being said I like the 5 image limit and think it should stay. The suggestions as "rules" works as I'm sure not all people have the various lenses at their finger tips and could be limited by such rules and then feel squeezed out.

It is a nice side challenge and I see it having many new people on board in the up coming months.

I would like to thank everyone who has commented on my images and let you know that I intend to do the same. It is always to have feed back so we can grow in the direction of our vision.

A great big THANK YOU to EstimatedEyes for everything.

This was a great side challenge, I really enjoyed it and I'm on board again for next time.

I love the idea of having other rules.

Another suggestion might be something such as creating a 'presentation' from your shots (a triptych (?) or something like that).

Again, simple ideas like including your own foot in at least one image could be fun, too.
09/18/2007 08:01:26 AM · #174
I really enjoyed the challenge the way it was, especially the fact it was not restrictive. I liked the 5 image upload, it was perfect. Sometimes people just need an excuse to just get out and have fun. no trying to please anyone, just showing someone your world, thru your eyes, without rules.
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind a suggestion such as 'see if you can find a purple flower in at least one of your shots' (not a requirement but something to hunt for)
I like the idea of various location walkabouts, I tend to visit craft fairs and old towns and walk the storefronts. I am at the intersection of 2 major rivers (Mississippi and Missouri) and there are so many river front towns that are so adorable. I would love to use those.
I also like the weekend walkabout idea. Gives more people more options.

This was a great idea and I am trying to comment on most of the images. I am definitely onboard for next month.

To add to shalrath's idea, I think it might be fun to ask that people take an object with them and include that in at least one picture. I've seen the journies of a duck and I think one other stuffed animal here, so take one of those, or something easy to carry. I was gonna say "egg", but realized that it's not really a good idea to travel with one of those lol. (Oh unless it's hardboiled and then you can have a snack while you walk around hehe)

It's been fun!
