They don't take up that much space when you mount them backwards, least not on the f4 versions.

I dont have a bunch of stuff yet so I just got a new bag in prep for my 24-70 f/2.8L and then when the lense arrived I realized that with the hood there was no way it was fitting in my bag. It never dawned on me to try and put it onbackwards. Ill have to give it a whirl.

I can flock it if need be, but third party hoods aren't flocked and seem to work just fine.
I've not had a hood for this lens, and usually don't shoot with a hood. I don't bump into things with the front element so it's not an issue for protection.

I think it's primarily the fact that you often rant and rave about people needing to have top gear in order to work professionally, yet here you are cheaping out on a low price item like a lens hood.

No one intentionally bumps into things with the front element of their lens. Those things happen accidentally. Are you trying to say you're perfect? Are you contained inside some sort of force field bubble that prevents you from being bumped into, falling over or from ever dropping anything?

No I bypass posts that make no sense in the realm of real life in protecting my gear.

No one bumps the front element on purpose, but the reality in the world I shoot in is things happen in a hurry and I cant control every other person/photographer or flying bat/ball/whatever and the added protection of something slowing it down before it gets to my money maker the happier I am.

And as suggested by Spazmo99, for someone who preaches equipment/insurance and so forth, cheaping out on something like a hood seems trivial and against what you preach in the forums, so no you dont get a break.
