I am going to buy a new camera and I am trying to decide between the Nikon Coolpix 5400 and the Canon PowerShot G5. These cameras are very similar, and I have heard a lot of good things about them in magazines. Could those of you who own either of these two cameras respond with pros and cons about your camera? If you have used both, maybe you can me an opinion about which one you think is better. Thanks!

Unfortunately the Sony 828 is out of my price range, and it is too bulky. I want something a little smaller. That is why I want opionions on these two cameras. Thanks.

When I was shopping, I compared the two, along with the Oly 5050Z and the Nikon 5700. The 5700 was just beyond my budget, and I did not like the controls. I didn't like the controls on the OLY either. I just thought the G5 felt more like a camera and the operation made more sense than the 5400.

I suggest that you get a CF card (you'll need to buy one anyway), go to the camera store and shoot a few shots with each of them, take the card home and compare on your system. While you're there, think about how it feels in your hand, how easy it is to change settings, which one feels more natural to use. Whichever one you pick, you'll have a good camera that you can enjoy and learn with.

More like $400-$500 more. I just ordered a G5 for $500 - the 828 is $999 - for that I'd go with the DRebel - like you. :)
