I'm in love with this lens :D i definitely should have bought it sooner! Took it out to the Sackville waterfowl park again this evening to see if i could get any new birds, and lo and behold a mighty Cormorant was drying his wings! Another notch on the collection :)

And a few Kingfisher shots Including a composite of one fishing):

And another of those cute looking Grebes!

Let me know what you think :D

The Cormorant ones are nice. A little post to bring up the details for the bird would help. Is s/he a fledging? I don't know anything about birds but s/he looks young. I really like the third one!

I really like the rich tones and the background blur on this one. Looks pretty sharp also. Did you do some PP on this?

This shot is nice as well. Some noise working in on it. Higher ISO? Nice catch.

well crap, I wasn't supposed to learn anything more today...I always thought these were the kingfishers. I thought I read somewhere that they spread their wings like this to cool off but also to provide shade on the water which most fish like to be in...but since I was wrong on what the name of this bird was, that is probably wrong too ;)

btw...very nice composite on the one diving...I especially like that you got him exiting the water too well done.

I really like the Kingfisher diving sequence! :)

I went with the 100-400 though, for the versatility. Of course, most of my shots of birds and wildlife are at the 400 end anyway ;)

Thanks everyone!

After about a dozen or so visits to that same waterfowl park, i finally got a shot of the Sora Rail they dont stop talking about. They're apparently everywhere but they hide pretty darn well according to my terrible track record hehe. These were both taken with the 400mm again (still in love with it :) )

Beautiful sequence on the KingFisher Andre. Do a google search on "Better Beamer". That would help with details on some of your tele shots.

Impressive shots! They're incredibly sharp and have a nice aesthetic to them.

Regarding the lens, care to post a 100% crop unprocessed? I'm always curious how sharp a lens is at 100%.

Thanks!

fir3bird, thanks, i've seen that before.. unfortunatly, i'll need a flash first :) i blew the bank getting all that i have already hehe..

Here's a 100% crop of the chest of that first Sora Rail, with only the ACR default sharpening.

I have enjoyed my Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L lens. While a little slow in low light, it delivers fairly sharp images, with a nicely blurred background, especially if one has some separation between the subject and the background. The cropped image below is 100%.

This is a snowshoe hare seen near Bear Lake, RMNP. Image captured from about 30 feet away, using the 3.5m switch option on the lens. Tripod mount.
