Just a short note to say that I am totally in awe regarding the quality of the images that have been recently submitted, particularly for the top shots for the Urban Landscapes II and Rural Landscapes challenges.

I started editing some photos last night of junk I shot last week and quickly realized that I am like a freshman surrounded by PhD candidates when it comes to the intricacies of using Photoshop.

The talent just blows me away.

That's it.

Yes there are some great images here. But if you are a freshman surrounded by PhD's in photoshop and photography - I must be...well...in Photo-layman. :)

When it comes to editing my mouse still has training wheels.

You have some great work.

I'm in the same spot as you. I was into photography as a teenager. (1970's) and I think a lot of my pictures over the years have been better than the average snapshot because of that. I made the "mistake" of starting a Flickr page to share family photos, and then I got invited to join a photo sharing group. I caught the bug again. I ran across a mention of DPChallenge on Worth1000.com the other day.

Seeing some of the awesome things others have done helps to give me some inspiration, in addition to learning techniques. It appears that this site is frequented by a lot of advanced amatuers as well as some pros, plus a few newbies and wannabees like myself. I think I can learn a lot here. The internet seems the ideal medium for sharing this kind of thing.

Here are some of my efforts at creativity for anyone interested. YoSpiff's Flickr page Contructive criticism is welcomed.

lol if your editing still has training wheels mine must not be conceived yet lol.

There has always been some amazing work here and what I like best is that almost everyone is willing to help others achieve that (or as close as their abilities will allow) leve.

Unfortunately, it seems that Photoshop skills are more relied on than photography skills here at DPC. :-(

Not entirely. No more than the dark room for film. But that's a different discussion. I do however look forward to seeing your entries.

The key to winning is being able to stand out from the pack visually, meet the challenge and accomplish both within the 1-2 second window that voters spend voting on each image. It doesn't matter whether it's straight from the camera or dolled up in photoshop.

Frankly, I find a lot of the editing done on winning shots to be quite average at best but they stood out. If the heavy edits win more it's only because more people have access to things like Photoshop and Photomatix. If super models and ring flashes were just as available those straight out of the camera shots would win, if not more. Then again if you had super models and ring flashes chances are you would be spending more time shooting for real than for the challenges.

I think you had better have a look at the Minimal Editing challenges.

Insects

Straight From The Camera

and for your own curiosity...here are the Minimal Editing Rules.

For people who (as you stated) rely on Photoshop skills....I would say that the members on this site are pretty darn talented. Wouldn't you agree?

I know the feeling. None the less just reading the post and looking at the submissions has taught me a lot. I finally did my first submission working on the second. I still can't belibe how fast you all are at submitting.

Photoshop does help the photographer quite a bit. Especially when you see a photo that i would normally throw into the recycle bin turned into a ribbon winner. At the same time tutorials are free and you can learn tons on the web about photoshop.
