with my photography business

I work a lot.

I got a M-F 8-5 job as a financial analyst (intern for now, hopefully "salaried" soon)
I work weekends as a photographer (sports portraits)
I also bounce at a venue that does metal/punk rock shows on weekends too.

Another thing that helps is that I work my moms photog company, and often times if she thinks we need something for a job, shell buy it for me, and since I use nikon and she uses canon (ive told her to switch so then we just have all interchangeable equipment) anything nikon she buys is mine.

My wife and I have set up a media company (she does video) and we are able to expense the equipment and some travel. (Tax write off.) It helps a bit with the costs, even though real revenue from the media company does not come close to the real cost of the equipment.

And I have been selling some of my guitars, which was my obsession in my former life.

40 hours M-F at my normal job, and then "weekend warrior" stuff (usually 2-3 gigs a week) Saturdays, Sundays and sometimes weekdays in pm, then editing those M-F at night.

i don't afford it! lol. guess im not busting my butt enough. I bought my innitial set of equipment off of extra student grants I got... hoping for that one more time before I graduate so I can buy a new computer (the old one died) but we'll see. Im knee deep in late paperwork.

I assist a wedding photog sometimes on weekends and told myself I'd use that money for equipment but 2 months of unemployment did away with that idea. Now I'm struggling to get back on my feet.

I refuse to accept any gifts (birthday, Christmas, baby shower, Flag Day, "Get Well Soon", etc.) that aren't photography related or CASH! :p And I make sure everyone knows well ahead of time what it is I need or want! Oh and I don't buy gifts for other people...I just give them pictures of stuff.

I book weddings way in advance and charge a 50% deposit immediately. I use all the deposit money to buy gear.

tons of people sell stock photography. Great cause you don't have to be pro to submit photos and you can make a good chunk of change if your photos are good.

Fotolia
Dreamstime
Istockphoto

Those are a few good sites to check out for starters.

Big rocks.
Works well on camera store windows as a well as unsuspecting strangers with good camera gear.

I wouldn't say cheap...more like I'm working with a different medium. Instead of buying my dad (who has everything he will ever need, for anything he likes to do) some shirt or crap for his desk, my wife buys big collage frames or frames that match the house or office and we fill them with pictures of kids, grandkids, family events, local scenery, etc.

Much more cost effective (aka cheap) and less hassle than running through a crowded mall or shopping for useless crap on the internet.

Plus any money saved is more money to spend on photography!

I have an appointment at 2:00 o'clock today to sell 5 prints at $85.00 each. I'd like to continue to duplicate a sale like this from time to time.

I make a point of winning the lottery every few months.

Seriously, I bought the D80 with my tax return and subsequent lenses and accessories with the cash from my part of a small family home business thing I do once a quarter.

I work overtime hours if I want something badly enough. I am a salaried professional (software developer/manager) but we have a special arrangement on our contract that, for the time being, allows us to do as much paid (straight-time) overtime as we want. At $66/hour I can potentially bring home an extra $4000 after taxes in one month. I haven't gone overboard using it to buy "toys", concentrating instead on making a better financial position for me and my family, but now that I've done that I am thinking of other ways I could spend the money (IF I chose to put in the overtime). It is tempting to bust my butt for a month or two and fill my bag with pro glass, but right now other things (home improvement, etc.) plus spending time with my family are greater priorities.

I have a state return coming soon, so I might re-invest haha.

You guys and your tax returns. Why do you give the Government a loan throughout every year only to pay you back with NO INTEREST?

If you are getting back more than $100 then you are getting back too much.

Raise your dependents and keep that money throughout the year for yourself.

On topic though. Scott I thought you taught yourself some html coding? If so offer to build website and help photographers here build theirs. Charge a fee of course. Have them paypal it to you ands before you know it you will have enough to buy some camera stuff.

My wife is very good at organising birthday presents, so I buy my own birthday presents, and she gets our rellies to chip in for what they bought me. :) It saves them the work of choosing stuff, and it they like being able to get me exactly what I want. Oh, and my birthday is on Father's day, so I get double the budget for my kids presents to me. :)
