Mint flavored toothpicks were my salvation. Maintained the hand/mouth oral fixation, but much healthier. Kept a little pocket toothpick holder filled with them. Each and every event associated with the habit, will need to be broken....one at a time. A year after stopping, leaving a movie theater for the first time since, hand automatically reached for the "pack" in my shirt pocket, even though they hadn't been there for 12 months. Each event, one at a time. After meals, morning coffee, and bar time, were the hardest. Stopped the bartime, and the toothpicks replaced the cravings after meals and with coffee. Sometimes, still get the urge for a Marlboro, especially when passing a Cowboy advertisement or seeing a red/white/black pack.

But.....about 15 years now.

Good luck Pitsaman!

I can proudly say that I haven't had a single cigarette in over 35 years (and I'm 35 years old...!)

How often do people decide to become somber? ;)

Good luck Kosta! I quit about 1 year ago(well, OK- it was One year, two months, one day, 13 hours, 26 minutes and 1 second ago). It was a great decision for me.

I read a little tidbit back then that helped me out a lot, maybe it will help you:

The urge will pass whether you smoke or not

I would feel like I got one thousand 10's on my picture if my Point of View picture inspired anybody to quit smoking... it's been a battle for my parents & I all my life ...they being many packs a day smokers and me hating it since I was 10 seconds old... May I offer some insight that I stumbled upon when I bought them as props for my picture. I could not believe that I had to pay more than $5 a pack for the 2 I bought to throw into the fireplace!!! I thought to myself then if people would spend the first couple of weeks after they quit smoking to keep purchasing them as usual but to NOT smoke them as they used to but to go home and throw the unopened packs into the fire like I did. Take a picture of them going up in smoke... I would think that at some point in time people may realize how much is going up in smoke and that they are better off without them, Soon they would find something better to spend their life and money on... too bad my parents can't ... it's so very sad for me that they couldn't quit ~ no matter what.
Kind regards
Tim

Grats and best of luck Kosta!

I quit smoking Dec 26 2001 at 7:50 am after smoking 1-1/2 - 2 packs a day for over 30 years. I want to add, that quitting this last time was one of the easiet things I have done. If I had known it would be this easy I would have quit at least 10 years earlier.

My last cigarette was planned well ahead. While it was definately the best cigarette I ever smoked, I can *honestly* say I have had *no* cravings. To assist, I took Zyban (Wellbutrin), and used the Nicotrol inhaler for the first 60 days. I was shocked with the results.

Today I enjoy having the extra money to purchase new toys =)

Hang in there friend, you won't ever regret making this decision.

Wow! Look at all those messages of enouragement! Hang in there Kosta! You're terrific.

I've never smoked, but my mom did for over 20 years. She started when she and a friend "forced" themselves to learn in the basement of their college dorm (it was cool to smoke after all). She hated it at first, then it just became part of her: something to do with her hands, something to do at a party, something to do talking on the phone. Then she started coughing and coughing. it got so bad she'd have to get up and leave concerts, my school plays, tennis games - she was missin gout on things she enjooyed most. She'd have to get up at night so as not to disturb my dad. One night she sat herself down and smoked one cig after another until she felt sick. When all the cigs in the house were gone, she stopped and never smoked again. The coughing stopped within the week. She was so happy she could do it! Still, 30 years later, she'll occasionally say, "You won't believe what I have a craving for now!"

I'm grateful to her - she made it through all the other school concerts and plays! But more importantly she lived a happier healthier life, made a good example for me, and probably kept me healthier too.

Good luck!
Watch for the temptation to inhale chocolate (or some other snack) as a substitute - I put on two stones when I stopped!
You CAN DO THIS!

Kosta keep going! You only have 22 more days to create a new habit.

Also think about all the camera accessories you can buy with all that saved cash. If you smoked a pack a day that equals out to about $120 a month.

Oh, Kosta, I keep all my fingers crossed for you. I have never smoked, but my husband did and he quit 2 years ago and it was the best thing he has ever done in his life.

It was not easy. For the first few weeks, he was quite not himself, but now, he is very proud of it. He saved the money and bought himself a decent set of golf clubs.

I admire the strenght in people. I am a weaklin, I don't know if I could attempt such a thing.

So keep going, and if it ever gets you down, just pop in here. Sooo many people here will understand.

2-3 packs a day for nearly 20 years.... 0 packs a day for 3 and a half. It can be done but only YOU can do it. Hope you didn't get the kind of wake up call that I did though. My doctor finally told me quit smokin' or breathin' my choice...

I haven't smoked a cigg for 2 month and a half. I've been a smoker for almost 20 years. Last year after Christmass I've decided not to quit (because I could not imagine this would be possible for me) but to cut down a bit. I started with delaying the moment of lighting a cigg. In about one year I've got to one cigg a day. All this time I never said once that I will quit. That would have scared me. One day I just didn't smoke that one cigg and I did the same on the next day... In about one month after that I dared to say: "I think I quit". I was not so scared anymore. After two month I told mom about it. I am still amazed and I am still not sure of me as I crave sometimes a cigg. I didn't go for a puff because it happened to me 5 years ago after quitting for 2 month to go back to cigarettes because of a puff. I am fighting the 5 kg I gained since I have stopped.
