Thom Hogan got the D70 PDF brochure from someone. Thise guy is no trolling fool, he is well known for his extensive knowledge of Nikon camera's and inside information.
He is also the writer of "Complede Guide to the Nikon (enter model here)" series.

Interesting specifications. :)

Edit: Just read that the kit lens DX 18-70 3.5-4.5G AF-S ID EF will sell for about USD500. The body itself will be USD999. No kit price yet.

That looks like a nice camera (although I'm not terribly familiar with Nikon equipment). I'm wondering why the camera would have a sync speed of 1/500th". The 10D has a 1/250th" and the D60 has a 1/200th" snyc speed. I just can't imagine where anyone would need anything this fast with a lighting setup (but I'm sure there is a reason). I'd like for anyone to share that (obviously that isn't Nikon specific info, tho).

Very interesting, but I'll believe it when I get my paws on one.

A higher sync speed allows the use of fill flash in bright light with the use of a larger aperture to limit DOF. Quite useful if you shoot outdoor portraits.

It just means you can use the flash with faster shutter speeds, which would be great for off the top of my head, hummingbirds on a bright sunny day

Did I correctly read minimum ISO of 200?

Just like the D100.

In addition to what Gordon and Spazmo said;

The 1/500th sync speed also allows the non-panned capture of fast action in low-light situation. Ideal for the amateur or mum/dad who wants to photograph sports indoors and stuff like that.
The 602 can do it up to 1/1000s. Never used it above 1/150.

Odd...I didn't know such things. so for anyone with a D100...any fallout from that? i.e., does that translate to slower shutter speed requirements, higher noise/grain than say the 10d?

Cool. Thanks folks.

I have a N80 Nikon 35 film SLR (blush; looking for a buyer to replace with a Canon Elan 7). It has a gridline in the view finder which you can turn on or off ... so you can compose for the rule of thirds. Kinda neat.

Azrifel...

Thanks.

"No PC Sync terminal (requires AS-14)...." If this is true, external strobes may be a hastle to connect.

The Coolpix line and the D100 don't have PC Sync terminals either- you have to use the aforementioned AS hotshoe attachment, and it works fine.

I assume you mean with some kind of flash? Obviously 1/500th of a second in low-light is gonna be a really dark picture.

Does the D70 support hi-speed sync flash? I don't think the D100 does, even if you have the latest Nikon flash that supports the feature. On Canon cameras with a Canon flash like the 420EX or 550EX, you can sync at any speed you want, even above 1/200th of a second... so the 1/200th limitation is only "a big deal" if you are using studio strobes... and even then, it isn't "a big deal".

The 10D, when used with Canon 420EX or 550EX Speedlights (flashes), can sync up to 1/4000 sec, which allows you to use fillflash outdoors in bright conditions with large apertures for shallow DOF, or stop motion.

With 3rd party flash units, sync is limited to 1/200 sec.

My Fuji 3800 has that feature, I have read that the Monolta A1 has it; I think a lot of digicams have it. It is useful but I never used it all the time.

Could someone list the main features as the info has been removed from the link.

- Type "bythom d70" into the google.com search box (www.bythom.com/D70.htm is the first one in the list)
- Then just click the "cached" option under the link description
- This will give you the D70 specs that were originally on the page. Don't know how often google updates their caches, so you may want to copy the info while you can.
01/22/2004 07:58:17 AM · #24
Note that the PDF file was never downloadable, just the text that is now only visible in Google's cache.

It looks very nice.
