I take pictures at my daughter's softball games and want to find a way to make it easier. Often I am at the end of the dugout, standing on a bucket, hanging over the fence for shots of the girls pitching or batting. After a game or two, my arms get tired. Then at dusk or nighttime, it's pretty near impossible to get a good shot. There's enough light during the day, but not so later in the evening. I was thinking of a monopod to help me out. Maybe even something (small tripod?) to strap to the chain link fence would help.

If it could do double duty, I also take indoor basketball/volleyball pictures and the lighting in gyms is awful. All of my pictures are blurry unless the girls are all still--like waiting for a free throw. Do I need a monopod for that too? Or just set my ISO settings higher? (I can only go to 400)

Any tips/hints/tricks of the trade would be most appreciated!!

Thanks in advance

a monopod, with a head that lets you angle the 'pod and also allows panning rotation is great (i.e., you can lock the head at the angle and still allow it to rotate parallel to the ground)

I do a lot of sports photography and I couldnt do without my monopod...681B Bogen with 3025 head

I got black so that there would not be any chance of the sun glinting off and distracting the player
Anyway, I have been very pleased with my monopod

I shoot a lot of soccer, vollyball and Ice skating all with very different requirements.

I have 2 monopods one is very thick and has a fixed base and makes a very solid platform.

My second is a little thinner with a piviot head on it, it gets used in area's where I am not shooting at the same level of the players.

That clamp would be a great I dea if you were just shooting the batter or a certain position.

I Sympathize with you on the lighting try shooting in an ice rink they have to be the worst when it come to lighting.

I have shot soccer, softball, and baseball (high school level of all 3) with my Velbon UP-4000 monopod, without an accessory head. I am very happy with it - it's sturdy, not too heavy, 4 segments, and suitable for photogs up to nearly 6 feet tall (I'm 5'9" and it can go a touch higher than I need). I'm not saying a head isn't necessary, but you can pan/pivot quite well without it. I do need to consider getting one for those times I want to tilt up or down while the 'pod is attached to the camera.

Over half of the photos in this portfolio Sports were shot using the monopod.

Since getting my monopod I dont think I have been to a sporting event where I havent used it. I have a manfrotto 679B monopod, which is very sturdy, and a 234 (head). Also if I need a quick release I have the 460mg head that i got to use with my tripod.

These two shots were both taken using it.

I too have trouble shooting indoor shots that are well exposed. Any tips about exposure indoors with action would be good...thanks
